Unbelievable. I spent the last week trying to get over the fact that Alkaline Trio/ Against Me! is sold out and at the 11th hour, Linny saves the mother fucking day. She is my own personal Jesus Christ. Free too, so I owe her dinner or something.
I do not care what Joe, Rick, Michael, or anyone else says. Against Me! is just plain fun. Their set was short but sweet. Pints of Guinness, Walking is Still Honest, Miami, Don't Lose Touch, T.S.R., You Look Like I Need a Drink... I wish they could have played longer, especially considering they were the ONLY opening act. (Which, while the subject is at hand, rocks. I wish more bands would bring one other equally cool band instead of three decent to crappy bands. More time for goodness, ya know?)
Anyway, now that I think about it AM!'s set was not really short. It just seemed that way because Alkaline Trio played for TWO AND A HALF HOURS. They started by playing "Cringe". Then they did "Cop". Then Matt goes "Well guys, we're two songs into the album so lets just do the whole thing for ya." and then they proceeded to play "Goddamnit." The entire album. (Almost) Straight through.
****SIDE NOTE**** This is big for me. Goddamnit! is perhaps the only album that matches Streetlight Manifesto's "Everything Goes Numb" and my vast collection of Bad Religion albums in terms of importance in development of my musical taste. Goddamnit! is a rock. It's a security blanket. No matter what the world is doing to me, I can always pop in that album and be at peace for thirty five minutes and seventeen seconds. It and Streetlight have stood the test of time, even now as my long proclaimed favorite band Bad Religion fades into a place equal to that of Green Day in my musical taste (meaning they were important but I don't listen to 'em too much anymore). So what I'm trying to say here is Matt, Dan, and Derek made my Goddamn night life.
Anyway. Then Skiba came out alone and did "Enjoy Your Day" (the only Goddamnit! song not played in order) and "Sorry About That" on the acoustic. Dan did "Blue in the Face" and "Emma" in the same manner. I could have died happily right then and there. Little did I know they weren't even half way done.
I don't even remember what else was played, but they finished with Radio. They did not play Stupid Kid, Crawl, or Cooking Wine but I'll let 'em slide THIS TIME because they played everything else.
I could no longer talk after the "Goddamnit" part of the show. I didn't realize that I knew every single word of that album until I was done screaming them with every other member of the sold out audience.
I want to shake the hand of the man working the lighting by the way. It was the best lighting I've ever seen. The lighting and Alk 3's being just absolutely on the top of their game tonight lead me to believe that this was the best produced (Ohhhh! Fancy industry terms!) show I have ever witnessed. (Of course most of them have been in bars with two stage lights and 3 foot stage, but whatever.) I think they were filming a DVD of some sort and so they went all-out-fancy-smanshy.
I want to continue writing about how good this show was, but I'll call it a night there. Thank you again to Linny. You are my favorite person in the world right now.
