As some of you have already heard, I've been asked by a friend of my if I was interested in sharing an apartment with her. To which my answer was a resounding "Yes!". And there was much squeeing

Jesus, that article scares me. Oh, man, I just get so *angry* about this sort of thing, it seems so ridiculous that more people can't see the damage the societal pressures are doing to these teenagers.
I concure. Fascinating reading, and I have to admit that the American view on sex that is expressed in the article frightens me. Since they were all teenagers, I'm not surprised they didn't mention BDSM - the only situation, in my mind, where the word "no" does not, necessarily, mean no (but then, of course, something else *does* instead).
What really frightens me? The way both male and female teenagers sexualize women and then penalize them for it. The way no middle ground seems to exist - either a girl wants to have sex or she's an innocent. There's no room for ambivalence or "not right now" or "not with *you*" and that.. frightens me a lot.
Exactly. What's the most horrifying for me is, I think, the notion that what the girl was wearing would have any importance at all. And this quote: "After a certain point, you can’t expect a guy to just stop." It scares me.
*nods* It's like they haven't moved beyond the whore/Madonna perception of women.
One of the things I really like about Heroes is the story of Lori Tremmel, a minor character at Claire's high school. She was raped by the quarterback, who then spread rumours about her being a slut and sleeping with the entire football team - probably in case she tries to report it. The audience learns the truth, though, and I just love Tim Kring for the message it sends. But I'll stop talking about Heroes now.
Well, I haven't talked to her since but I think it's going to be a while before we get any offers. :-)
Believe me, I understand - all responsibility for sex is pushed onto the woman, because clearly, "guys just can't help themselves". It's incredibly demeaning not only to women, but to men as well. And they don't even notice.

This is one of those rare occasions when I can honestly say I'm happy to have been born in this country.
