Cooking - yeah, it's there - in the open.
The thing is that a lot of people don't know how to cook. The problem is just that, they don't know how to cook. Why is that a problem? How is that a problem? There are fast food joints, family restaurants, conney islands, greasy spoons, and fine dining everywhere. People don't need to cook, right? I mean, isn't the buying of prepared food helping the economy? On some level this logic is right, but on a lot of levels this idea is wrong.
Who is buying the kitchen appliances? What about all the groceries? Not only that, but how does it affect the wallets of the people who are eating out all the time? I can spend twenty dollars to make a pot of organic white chicken chili, or on a decent dinner (I live near Detroit). That pot of chili will feed me for more that a week, which is a lot more than one meal at a diner or formal restaurant. With them money saved I am not just able to buy the equipment to create more meals, buy more food, and all the costs in preparing food. The money I save is more than that needed to continue my actions. There is a lot more than just the money going on here.
In cooking for yourself, or your family you control what is going into the food. It's more than just the pride and feeling of accomplishment, it's the ability to keep the family/yourself safe from preservatives, etc. It also allows control over portion sizes. Though the incredible move from human to sloth does greatly plague the USA in the way of obesity, so is the explosion of serving sizes into monstrosities. It's incredible how much food some people don't realize that they are eating in one day. My belief is that cooking for yourself lets you know how many stalks of celery, carrots, animal fat, and tomatoes go in the pot - and on your plate.
The facts stated above are not the real problem. The real problem are the people who say that their children shouldn't learn how to cook. Girls shouldn't learn how to cook because it "isn't a girl's job, and it subjugates her to outdated sexist beliefs", and so the next generation doesn't learn how to cook. Men shouldn't learn how to cook because "it's a girl's job, and it would emasculate them", so they don't know how to cook. It's insane, it makes no sense. People should be self-sufficient, regardless of gender.
Taking away people's ability to take care of themself is ignorant, especially if it's due to some antiquated social ideology. Self-sufficiency is important, essential to being autonomous. The very idea that it's not your job to take care of yourself, and that you are not responsible for your health is stupid. Making yourself healthy is not just buying cans or boxes and warming them up in a microwave or on the stove. Ramen noodles and macaroni and cheese cannot be seen as healthy cuisine. This is not just a problem of lower class individuals who have no education, but this is a wide spread issue. Just to look at the future, the idea of being at the mercy of someone who cannot cook what your palate finds acceptable. It is not acceptable to put yourself in this position.
