When I first logged on lj yesterday, I was shocked that
pornish_pixies was
permanently suspended by the lj abuse team. Lj has been suspending comms and ljs on account of offensive and indecent interests such as ‘chan’, ‘paedophilia/pedophilia’, ‘incest’ and ‘beating people up’ (am not kidding) due to
pressure from WFI (or others).
It’s totally acceptable and even commended to report journals with online predators and suspending those journals/capturing rl offenders. What’s NOT acceptable is for an outside vigilance community to force their ethical beliefs onto us and preventing the freedom of speech. Personally, I do not condone paedophilia, rape and incest in rl. Paedophiles and rapists deserve no sympathy nor should they be let out of jail with their privates intact.
However, fanfiction/fiction is a different thing altogether. Sometimes, they will be incest, paedophilia and/or rape portrayed in a fanfic. BUT, they’re fictional stories. Not rl ones. No doubt, these acts can be glorified in a fic. Nevertheless, they can also be written not for titillation purposes nor to endorse these behaviours, but to show how sickening they really are, and how much they had affected a character.
Therefore, fandom comms shouldn’t be suspended in the first place. Even more baffling was the fact that several discussion comms for a book called
Lolita and support groups for victims of aforesaid crimes was suspended too. WTF indeed.
What makes me angry is that several years of fanfictions and fanarts and hard work were deleted without any prior warning. At least, look through the comm’s contents and issue a warning before suspending it (for comms not harbouring any sex offenders). So many innocent people are permanently suspended because of this.
I agree with
liz_marcs. It’s really stupid to advertise that you are going to suspend those predatory journals/comms before doing so. I personally believe that the vigilantes want recognition for busting paedophile sites. If not, why would they publicise what they’ve done? Now real offenders who weren’t suspended yet are in hiding and the legit organizations monitoring them won’t have any evidence left. You’re not targeting any fannish journals? Bullshit.
Anyway, if you participate/are in/support any fandoms at all and you are an lj user, join
fandom_counts(an LJ community specifically for getting a a body count of LJ fandom members. There is no posting access, no interests listed. It's only a body count) to see how many of those 13 million ljs belong to members of a fandom.
Also, check out the fandomtossed community in GJ for more details about
strikethrough '07.
It still hasn't blow over yet. *fumes silently*
