The Doctor Who universe is expanding once again

For fans of the series, this Christmas and New Year's Day was a great one as the latest Doctor Who Christmas special, the end of season 1 of Torchwood, and a preview episode of the latest spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures, all aired within the last few days or past week. I finally got caught up with all of them just today as I didn't have internet until yesterday. The rest of the entry will be cut for spoilers.

Doctor Who Christmas Special - The episode starts at the end of season 2 where the Doctor tries to figure out how a bride named Donna managed to get aboard of the Tardis since it was in space at the time. A crazy adventure ensures as he tries to get her back to the wedding which the Tardis doesn't perform correctly along with the return of the Pilot Fish (those are the robot Santas from the last Christmas special) who wants her for some scheme. This Christmas special wasn't as good as the last one in my opinion. This special didn't really define the upcoming season like the last one did with Torchwood but I think the Doctor's ability to become a heartless bastard and go back to the jolly good self would be a central theme. Also I wonder if the new companion could control this dark mood swing like Rose could. This new companion from what I saw in the preview for Season 3 seems more gung-ho and could take care of herself but I guess I need to wait until April to judge her. In Season 3, Captain Jack and Darek Sek are coming back which brings me to the next show.

Torchwood Ep 11-13: It seems that Torchwood suffers from the episode 11 curse of Doctor Who seasons as it's one of the poorer episodes of the season. The only good part of the episode was when Gwen tries to reset her relationship with Rhys. The rest was just bad. Enough of episode 11 and move on to the two-part finale. As with the last two episodes of the new Doctor Who seasons, these episodes were great. Episode 12 reveals that Captain Jack took the name of a pilot who died the following day as part of his undercover work in his WWII days. I always thought that Jack Harkness was his real name and managed to forge his records but his real name is still unknown. Tosh really shine in this episode with her chemistry with Captain Jack along with her quick thinking. As much people hate Owen, he's necessary as they need just an asshole like him (along with a pure straight character) to do the stupid things. I really like to know Ianto's backstory as he was able to shoot Owen in the shoulder on purpose. The finale has the team trying to correct the mistake that Owen did when he opened the Rift to save Jack and Tosh. I really like how the rest of the team turned on Jack as they fell for Bilis's trap which they had lots of balls to do that to Captain Jack. The end was sort of anticlimactic but the final scenes is going to lead into the finale of Season 3 of Doctor Who with Captain Jack going with the Doctor for something.

Torchwood has emerged out of the shadow of Doctor Who and became something. I don't really mind all the homosexually and sex as it's part of the mood. I read on forums on how Torchwood was Gwen's show which was true for most of the season but I always felt that the show should focus on the human element instead of alien being. The last two episodes made it back into Jack's show which there are so many unanswered questions like how he managed to escape from Gamestation for instance and why he joined with Torchwood. People want Owen and Gwen killed off the show as they were annoying but Owen has to stay for the asshole factor and Gwen could be less whiny. I do agreed with them about more Tosh and Ianto as they could be great characters if given more screen time. Bilis could be a nice recurring villain for Torchwood like how the Dareks are in Doctor Who. And now something totally opposite.

The Sarah Jane Adventures - This show is more like Doctor Who but like Torchwood it's set in Britain (I think London but I'm not sure). Sarah Jane Smith was a former companion of one of the previous Doctors who met the current Doctor back in Season 2 and uses various gadgets (like Sonic Lipstick and yes, I'm not kidding) to do various good involving aliens. She gets involved with a company that produces Bubble Shock which aliens are trying to enslave Earth with it. Along the way, she meets up with the new neighbor girl named Maria who sees her talking with an alien one night and an created human boy. Now they deal with the various aliens that fall and/or come to Earth.

This series is geared towards children which is rather odd as it has lots of references to the older seasons of Doctor Who and her character is nostalgia as well. This nostalgia value is going to get older people to watch the series along with the various Doctor Who fans. I did like the episode (I still laugh when she uses the Sonic Lipstick). This series is going to start airing in the spring along with the Season 3 of Doctor Who. Torchwood will come back for Season 2 in October. It would be nice for the Sarah Jane Adventures to start right now instead of the spring since it would fill the void of Doctor Who related series right now. If there was another spin-off, it should be in the summer so you would have Sarah Jane in winter, Doctor Who in spring, random spin-off in summer, and Torchwood in fall for a complete year of Doctor Who fun.

Random thought: It's so cool to say the Doctor, Captain Jack, and Sarah Jane Smith. They just sound so cool to say.
