Is the end near??

After first hearing about this contraption earlier today, I've been reading up a bit on it. For those that didn't hear about it, a European scientific group has finished building the worlds largest atom smasher in hopes to recreate the Big Bang in a "controlled" micro scale environment. The machine is the largest in the world and atoms will be beamed around a 17 mile long circumference tube that's been built some 300+ feet underground, in Switzerland. The machine is set to be switched on today. Once brought up to full speed (which is and atom circling the tube 11,000 times a second) they will then fire another beam in the opposite direction and they will collide together and it's really anyone's guess what will happen. The controversy is that micro black holes could be formed, which could ultimately consume and swallow up the Earth into nothing. Pretty scary stuff, but rather far fetched at the same time... Thoughts or opinions?
