Yes this: "Also, this may make no sense whatsoever, but it feels like we haven't had any alone time with Sam and Dean for a while."
I was just thinking that there have been no moments of Sam & Dean tension Or UST in the last several episodes, hardly any of that on screen time that makes the show for me. No matter how many references are made to them or how much fun the boys have it's just felt off to me, even much of the humor has felt forced.
Still love show and love it more tonight than some of the previous episodes - there were some touching moments, even if they weren't S/D and Becky was not as over the top as I had feared.
Same here. I still love the show, still enjoy it. But not having those iconic Sam&Dean moments leaves me feeling off. I keep wondering how the boys are really doing--things have seemed fine since they made up at the end of "Fallen Idols," but that seems too easy after all the previous tension.
I'm also used to the episodes being more balanced, with a comedic episode sandwiched in between darker/dramatic episodes. And with the exception of "I Believe The Children Are Our Future," we've had a long string of mostly light fare. Which worries me, regarding what's to come! Have they been buttering us up for a huge blow?
The balance seems off to em this season, although I was one of the ones who enjoyed the most recent ep - the only thing I wanted that I didn't get was I wanted Sam to be there when the roleplay Sam/Dean told Dean that he didn't get his own life, I really wanted Sam to hear that too! :)
"Have they been buttering us up for a huge blow?"
Kripke seems to be able to keep pulling off surprises, which is one reason to keep watching, but yes I think things may get very dark. :) I told DH if I was Kripke and I knew I wasn't going to renew, there is no reason not to have the epic Lucifer/Michael ending... not what I want to see, but I can understand the appeal from the creators side.
Obviously things did indeed get very dark. Even though we could see it coming, it still didn't soften the blow. I bet Kripke delights in it. Evil little awesome man. *g*

Right, go for it all, or go home. I don't really want to see the Michael/Lucifer show down either. At least, not with the boys as vessels (which is, I assume, the only way that would happen), because then it won't be the boys anymore. The grounded, grittier nature of the show has been one its most appealing aspects. That, despite all the craziness of the world they live in, they're really just ordinary guys (okay, with a bit of demon blood in Sam)--getting by, trying to do their job, etc. And I want them to stay that way... and still save the day.
Kripke has said it is all about family for him, so...here's hoping.
I think it's hard when The boys have been pitted against something so obviously more powerful than themselves, it's a fine line to tread to get dramatic tension, keep your heroes heroic and not trip into changing them or having to resort to ex dues machina in some form - having something other than the boys save the day.
Of course there is always the Butch/Sundance, Angel epic ending of going down guns blazing, which I think both actors have stated their preferences for, but if show is renewed that's not an option ...

*crosses fingers with you that Kripke keeps the focus on family*
If going out Butch and Sundance style is really the only (or best) option, then I guess I'll be okay with it. It's better than going out with a whimper. And I'm sure the writers, cast and crew would put 120% into it. But, whether or not they go into a 6th season, I'd really love to see the boys survive the Apocalypse and make it to the other side, possibly return to regular hunting. Then for an end they could show the Impala driving down the road, going off into the sunset, with the sense that the boys are still out there. Even after the show ends, we could pretend that the boys are still saving people, hunting things. In that way, they'd become a legend of their own.
But yeah, truly! I don't envy SPN's writers one bit!

Glad I don't have to write it...
