(no subject)

Today I went to Philly and met up with Bonnie and Victor to see the Nandalal Bose exhibit at the art museum. I thought I'd share some of my favorite pieces from it here. His work proved to be frustratingly difficult to hunt down on the internet, so the selection is a little limited.

The scope of Bose's style was quite varied, spanning influences such as Expressionism (or post-Impressionism, as one piece struck me as incredibly reminiscent of Van Gogh) to traditional Chinese and Japanese illustrative style to graphic political posters (even a handful of works that brought to mind Diego Rivera). However, his subjects remained, overall, traditionally Indian-both natural and spiritual-which was his focus, i.e. to recapture Indian culture and custom post-British colonialism.

I couldn't find the title to this one, and unfortunately can't remember it.

Read more about Bose and view thumbnails of other artworks here.

Afterwards, we saw a performance by the Nardhana Academy of Dance, which was lovely albeit a bit overrun by wriggling, screaming children in the audience. It's wonderful that parents want to expose their kids to art and culture, but maybe your two year old isn't quite yet an age where he/she might appreciate classical Indian dance, hmm? Even if the dancers' costumes are all bright and shiny and jingly-jangly, it won't hold your toddler's attention forever.

Also on the kid front, there was an English family at the exhibit, whose two kids were drawing on tablets... I suppose trying to sketch the art on the walls. Apparently one of the security guard yelled at them and said they had to stop. Umm, the fuck is up with that? They're kids. Drawing. They're not taking photographs or making illicit duplicates of the artwork or ripping off the artist or museum in any way. What an asshole. Wonder of he ever worked security for Wachovia....

museum whoring, art for fuck's sake
