Favourite Things

I was doing some recording yesterday, including a guitar part for a song of mine which we will pretend is nameless. :-) A bit later, I was talking to Jane and remarked that, whenever I go back to that song, it immediately becomes my favourite. Her response was that, although she liked it, she wouldn't exactly call it my best.

Usually I think of a favourite thing as being a situational attribute and would therefore agree with her that an absolute label like that isn't reasonable. That got me thinking about why I feel the way I do about the song. I decided that it was because it's the closest I've ever come to creating something that matches what I set out to create.

When I sing/play a song I've written, I almost always hear words that aren't quite what I mean or a melody that sounds derivative or something else that disappoints me at least a little. I've written songs that are so far off that people think they're about zombies when they aren't...or about robots when they aren't.

In the end, this is my favourite song because it doesn't make me apologize for its existence, not even to myself.
