Charlie studied his friend studying something spread over the various piles of clutter on his desk. It looked to be blueprints, but he didn’t know why Larry would be looking at blueprints.
“Whatcha working on?”
Larry gave a yelp, “Do. Not. Do. That.”
“Sorry,” Charlie placed a hand on Larry’s shoulder. “Whose blueprints are these?”
“Ours.”
“Ours?”
“Not ours as in yours and mine; ours as in Megan and mine. In three weeks we make settlement on this house and I can’t figure out which room would be most advantageous for the nursery. The Bernsteins used this room,” Larry pointed, “but I think that there must be a better room. This room doesn’t have adequate airflow to control mold or dust. Plus, if the master bedroom is here, then that just isn’t spatially optimal for ease of transfer for early feedings.”
“Wait,” Charlie held up his hands, “you and Megan are buying the Bernstiens’ house about five blocks from us?”
Larry nodded, “Yes, is that okay?”
“Yes, Lawrence, that’s wonderful,” Charlie smiled. “Come on, give me some data so we had pick the best room for little Charlene’s nursery.”
Larry rolled his eyes as he started giving Charlie the specifications.

Colby tried to suppress a groan as he stretched waking up, but he couldn’t quite do it.
“I told you to take your pain pill last night,” Charlie whispered as he rubbed Colby’s back.
“And the Whiz Kid is always right,” Colby grumbled. Feeling Charlie’s hand still, Colby rolled over to look at him, “I’m sorry, Char. I’m just so annoyed at still waking up this way.”
Charlie propped himself up on an elbow to study the other man. Since Colby had come home from the hospital, he had been living with Charlie and Alan. At first, it was so that they could help care for him, but now it just was. Still over the last few weeks, Charlie was being to wonder if there was more than Colby’s body that needed care and healing. Charlie sighed, “You were shot not long ago, Col, and yesterday you had to tackle a suspect. Of course you’re sore this morning.”
Colby shook his head and crawled out of bed, “I’ve been shot before, Charlie. I’ve tackled suspects before. I just can’t shake this damn aching and it is getting old. No, I’m getting old.”
Charlie sadly watched Colby head to the shower.

Alan smiled at his son’s lover as he entered the kitchen, “Morning, Colby. Ready for breakfast?”
Colby attempted to return the smile, but failed, “I think I’ll just have coffee this morning, but thanks, Alan.”
“You need more that just coffee this morning. It’s going to be a long day helping Megan and Larry move, you’ll need your strength.”
Colby laughed, “You sound like my mom and her three square meal a day speech.”
“She sounds like a smart woman. If I could just get you boys to eat one square meal everyday, I’d die a happy man.”
“Don’t say something like that,” Colby gripped his shoulders. “Please …”
At the pained and sad look in Colby’s eyes, Alan cut him off, “I’m so sorry, Colby, I was just teasing. You and Charlie and Donnie are stuck with me for a while longer.”
“I… I’m sorry… I… just can’t lose anyone else right now. Especially not another person I care about.”
“Oh, son,” Alan pulled Colby into his arms in a fierce hug.
For the first time since David’s death, Colby allowed himself to grieve as he leaned into Alan’s embrace.
From the doorway, Charlie smiled softly at the scene.

Charlie left Colby and his father in the kitchen.
While Colby was dealing with the loss of his best friend, Charlie had been more concerned with Colby’s physical healing.
Charlie sank down on the stairs for a moment allowing himself to think.
While Colby was dealing with the loss of his best friend, Charlie had been more concerned with Don’s guilt over losing a team member.
Charlie’s eye was drawn toward the wall in front of him and the gold-framed picture hanging there.
While Colby was dealing with the loss of his best friend, Charlie had been more concerned with helping Larry get the new house ready.
Charlie stared at the photo of Larry and he the day he received his second doctorate.
While Colby was dealing with the loss of his best friend, Charlie had been too concerned to understand.
Charlie hadn’t realized how awful it must have been for Colby to lose David until his thoughts turned to Larry.
While Colby was dealing with the loss of his best friend, Charlie thought about the picture of Colby and David that his Dad took on one of their poker nights.
Charlie would find a gold frame for that picture.
