Another side of Ryan
The cover was bright, big letters declaring the title and producing a gleeful smile on Seth’s face. He’d been waiting for this for months and now it was finally here. He opened the front door, carrying the rest of the post in as well.
Entering the kitchen, he grimaced at the sight of his parents lazily filling in a crossword in each other’s arms.
“Oh come on guys, what have we talked about huh? No sex in the champagne room.” Sandy grinned and kissed Kirsten on her forehead passionately. She giggled and pushed him away.
“What have you got there?” She asked, indicating towards his arms.
“Oh, just our entertainment for the day.” he said innocently. “Is Ryan home by chance?”
“He’s taking the morning shift at work.” Sandy told him returning to his crossword.
“Well that makes this very nice timing. Parents, behold what I have managed to get a hold of.” He showed them the front cover and Kirsten was immediately on her feet.
“Where did you get it?” She asked incredulously.
“Oh you know, I fought a great battle and this was my reward,” He paused for dramatic effect.
He rolled his eyes at his father’s lack of enthusiasm. “Father, we have here probably the most amusing video known to man kind and you just sit there filling in a cross word. Now please, to the living room before Ryan comes home and uses it to bash my head in.
Now it was Sandy’s turn to roll his eyes but he got up and slid the newspaper under his arm.
Seth jumped up and down clapping his hands together with an evil laugh.
“Do you think there will be dancing? Or oh my God singing? Oh this is too perfect.” He hurried into the other room and his parents followed behind, both amused by his excitement.
By the time they arrived in the living room, Seth had already set up the video player and was sitting on the sofa waiting for them.
They sat down and Seth pressed the ‘play’ button.
“Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to Chino Hill’s summer play- ‘You’re a good man Charlie Brown’”
Kirsten put her hand on Sandy’s and they both smiled at each other. This was the closest either of them had ever been to see a little of Ryan’s past.
They all watched as a small boy came onto the stage wearing a dog costume. He had a painted black nose and blue eyes that darted around the room. He gently swayed from side to side with the music and Kirsten could feel her eyes prick with tears at how cute he looked.
The screen soon filled with children dancing around the stage, hand made costumes galore.
It turned out Ryan was actually a pretty good dancer and the closeness between him and Theresa was obvious. They both danced together and shared small smiles.
It was nearing the end when the sound of the door shutting made them all jump. Seth dived for the remote but it was too late. Ryan stood wide eyed by the sofa, his eyes transfixed to the screen.
Seth pressed the stop button and shot him a guilty grin. “Hey bro, what’s up?”
“Where did you get that?” Ryan asked, a horrified look on his face.
They were quiet for a while, none of them knowing what to say.
Finally Seth piped up, “What can I say? I have the right links I guess,” Ryan bit his lip, his face red.
“Ryan, you were so good… and so cute.” Kirsten said brightly, smiling at him.
Ryan looked at her and his face went redder. “I can’t believe you watched that,” he muttered and moved his eyes to the floor.
Sandy chuckled “I tell you what, if you let us watch the end of this… you can watch Seth’s bar mitzvah video.”
“What!” Seth shouted. “That’s ridiculously unfair!”
Ryan raised his eyebrows at him. “At least you’re not dancing in yours,” he said annoyed.
Seth looked around at his parents. “No but it is however the most embarrassing thing ever. At least you look kind of cool in yours.”
“Seth, I’m Snoopy!” Ryan cried.
“Ryan we have like two minutes left, please let us watch it. It’s so nice seeing you when you were younger.” Kirsten pleaded.
He sighed and they all watched him closely to see what he was going to say.
“Fine,” he breathed “but I get to see the bar mitzvah video.” Before Seth could object he added. “You did see my bar mitz-vahkkah so really you do owe me.”
Seth groaned but finally nodded begrudgingly.

Two hours later, when both videos were over and all the tears of laughter were dried and the two boy’s faces were back to their normal colour, the four of them sat back against the back of the sofa.
“Seriously Seth how did you get a hold of the Snoopy video?” Ryan asked.
He shrugged. “I have my ways,” They all looked at him.
“Fine, Theresa’s mom called a few months back and asked if we wanted a copy as she had a few spares,” Ryan sighed and grimaced.
Kirsten laughed at his face. “Well, I thought it was adorable.”
She commented and his grimace grew deeper.
Sandy watched the interaction and gave a contented smile. It was nice to see another side of Ryan that didn’t involve any broken bones.
The End.
