This morning I saw a guy in Harvard Square --middle-aged, gray-haired, with a bit of a beer gut, plaid shorts, polo shirt, and shiny things in his ears which made me say, oh wow, he has earrings! Which I thought was totally cool, because I just love it when people behave against type (sometime I'll tell you about my wonderful tattooed nurse at the hospital), and he was so not the earring type that it was wonderful....except that when I got closer it turned out they were those earbuds that people use to listen to their ipods. This was very disappointing.
Perhaps this is why, whenever I put a character or an incident from real life into a story, I invariably get the criticism that it's a stereotype.
