my ears are bleeding!

i'm at the studio right now taking a break from mixing. we had some high school students in here last week doing a january term recording project, and now i'm trying to get these 5 songs mixed by friday, but it's killing my ears. i'm basically doing a lot of turd polishing, as we call it in the industry...

not that i'm complaining, it's just damn hard. i'm actually really appreciating the challenge.

funny story... last night i ostensibly bought a new car. my friend robbie fixes up cars and sells them, so i decided to take his Merkur Scorpio off of his hands. i've been holding out for a volvo 740 station wagon, but they really don't go for less than $2000, which is a little rich for me right now. but the merkur seemed in great shape, and it's really fun, and he only wanted $1000 for it, so it seemed an obvious choice. drove it around, it was sweet.

so i go downtown to pick it up last night, get up the hill to my neighborhood, and it cuts out in the middle of the street! which i somehow knew was going to happen. i wasn't even pissed because i so expected something to go wrong. i couldn't get it to restart, so i coasted it to the side of the road and called my brother and robbie. my brother and i went to the studio and i worked on these mixes for a bit until robbie could come over. while i was here, ric (the guy who owns the studio) came in and said, "did you hear that dave nixon is selling his 740? he only wants a grand and he'll take it over 2 payments...", which i found to be very ironic indeed.

so robbie and i go back to the car, get it running, and then headed to his house to get a license plate for it, since i was driving around uninsured and tagless, which pretty much guarantees problems w/ the police, i would think. we about 5 minutes down the road, i took a corner really hard, and the engine cut out again. this time we spent an hour in the middle of the road working on it, trying to ground the battery properly, and eventually he pushed it with his car off to the side of the road.

robbie dropped me off at my house around 11:30. i got up this morning, made tea and a smoothie, listened to the new philip glass cd that i got for christmas, and after trying to figure out who i could get a ride to the studio from, i said fuckit and walked. and it was lovely. i really don't walk places enough anymore. it took about 45 minutes.

as i was walking in this lovely 60 degree weather with a warm breeze blowing on my face, i realized that i didn't have a car, i don't have a bank account (a long story that doesn't need to be told. it's not my fault, that's all i'm saying), and i was walking to work at a job for which i'm not being paid at the given moment. and it was a really nice feeling, that i'm doing what i want to be doing, because otherwise i would be thoroughly depressed, but clearly i'm not.

pretty sweet.

jonathon yer remix is choice thus far.
