My computer just busted on me. A good bust, not a cheap one just for the thrill of it that I can fix pretty easily. It had been acting up the last couple days, booting into OS 9 despite the fact that OS X is cleary the startup disk, resetting the date/time. Usually that means the internal battery is going dead. Two reboots and the problem was fixed--why two I don't know. But just 30 minutes ago I was working in VirtualPC, running Win2000 when the computer just up and shut itself off. I am only able to reboot into OS 9, and even then I encounter a system error at startup or watch the computer die while browsing the Finder with my extensions off. For the love of God Windows 2000 killed my Mac.
I've run Disk Repair off the OS X startup disk, which I cannot start up from because the CD-Drive is not an Apple original. It reports problems and tries but fails to fix them. The computer then shuts down with a click of the drive. A noise... If I listen closely I can hear a high pitched, almost airy hum, emanating from the hard drive when the power cord is in. Very bad. I popped off the processor card, checked my drive connections, checked some other connections, set everything back in place, and hoped for the best. The computer no longer turns on. That's pretty much the opposite of what I was hoping for.
Ugh. I think the drive is shot. But I must get at least the documents of it. Shit Shit Shit. I'm able to complain thanks to my parents iMac. It will also be my parents iMac that takes me to Apple's home page right now. Am I going to by a new computer?
