Today I got to see
Central High in Little Rock. Yes, that Central High. The "Little Rock Nine" Central High, one of the many flashpoints during the struggle for civil rights.
I was amazed by the beauty of the building. I wasn't expecting it to be so striking and imposing. Of course, since it is a National Historic Site, federal funding helps maintain the grounds. In addition, the 50th anniversary of the crisis (as many here refer to it) took place recently, and the school was spruced up for the occasion.
Across the street from the high school is the original Mobil station. It looks like something out of time. For awhile, it served as the visitor's center. Now it just looks cool...and even though it was closed, it's still fully functioning.
I also did a pair of back-to-back school visits at Rockefeller Elementary and Washington Elementary. At one of the schools, I got to use a
Promethean. Coolest thing ever. It's like a Smart Board on steroids, similar to what CNN started using during their election coverage. I want one!
Finally, in the evening, I attended the Author Reception for the
Arkansas Literary Festival. Here's Brad, he coordinated my visit here to Little Rock.
