‘They bring people together,’ she told him once. He wasn’t quite certain if that were true, but she used it cleverly in creating friendships with customers.
“Marianne, would you happen to know a five letter word for curse? Chemskaya, three letter word for politician, dear.”
Everyone answered her as best they could, some were right, others funny, but wholly incorrect and they always said it with politeness. He envied the ease with which she gained trust from complete strangers.
