I can't believe I haven't posted this. I moved in August, from application support to Junior Database Administrator within my current employer. Not sure I'm too happy with the "Junior" bit but I'll cope for now, however the move is amazing for me. I am now (jointly) responsible for the company's MySQL, Oracle and MS SQL instances.
The amazing thing about this is the amount of training I'm getting! As well as the MySQL course (and certification!) earlier in the year, in a couple of weeks I've an Oracle Admin course and a backup/recovery course. I'm ending up with about £10k's worth of training in a few months and at least one certification. Brilliant!!
It's been tough, moving within the company. I was supposed to be replaced by one of our infrastructure team, who resigned rather than take the job... Then my colleague in the apps team went off on long term sick after surgery, so I've been doing a horrible hybrid, which is what I was promised wouldn't happen... But the circumstances all went a bit wrong so I don't blame them. Too much.
I'm really enjoying the learning and the challenge of the new position. I'm loving getting to properly play with large scale databases and experiment with stuff that I never thought I'd get the chance to!
I'm also enjoying the potential for, you know... a "career"! Never really had that before :-)
