Doctor Who - The End of Time

So I have watched David Tennant's swan song ....

and I am not overly impressed.  The story was better than some RTD has given us and David was much as he ever is, but for what was billed as an epic goodbye to the 10th doctor I found it rather uninspiring and in parts down right upsetting.

For me the star of this episode was John Simms because while I have no idea how many of those costumes he actually put on he clearly was having a damned good time doing it.  And also, the Master had the redemption arc - which is good for him and all, but this was supposed to be 10's story.  The runner up of course was Bernard Cribbins as Wilfred Mott.

As with many New Who fen I know next to nothing about the Original Who so much like Wilf, the only things I really knew about the Time Lords is what 9 or 10 has told us.  It was interesting enough to see them, and as the 'bad guys' at that, but really the only thing I want to know is who was the woman - the weeping angel (and now I want to watch "Blink").  But shouldn't the Time Lords have been brought back for a bigger purpose?  Shouldn't I be intrigued by who they are, were, could be?

Mostly I was just uninspired.  Part 1 was boring.  And in the middle of Part 2 all I kept thinking was how much stronger the previous season finales had been.  Honestly, Journey's End did a much better/more interesting job of rounding everyone and bringing the DA to life.  Yes, I teared up as 10 went to visit/save/get one last look at his former companions and I thought the did a very good job of making Billie look like young Rose.  But there was a part of me that just kept insisting this was so wrong; self-indulgent and meaningless.  And in the end I believe that was proven correct.

In the end, 10 stood in the TARDIS alone and said "I don't want to go yet".  The very man who convinced us he was still the Doctor after regenerating from 9, who tried to convince people that TenII was the same man after a half regeneration/metacrisis - went out with a whimper pleading not to die as if regeneration was a true death. And this is where I really get upset.

I am just SOOOOOOO tired of TPTB ignoring canon - their own or someone else's - for the purpose of self-indulgent melodrama and grandstanding.
