I reached a point of frustration with McAfee where I uninstalled it with a year left on the subscription. Because it does little good for my computer to be "protected" if I cannot in fact USE it half the time.

Also, from what I've read, it is indeed a bigger problem for older computers (mine is five years old).

I replaced it with AVG Free about five months ago and have yet to be sorry. Nowhere near the resource hogging, updates are a breeze, and the free version is perfectly sufficient for a normal person's home computer. Go forth and relieve yourself of the stress.

I ditched McAfee about 8 years ago precisely because it wasn't reliable about actually starting up when the PC did. There didn't seem to be any point to having antivirus protection that only ran when it felt like it ( ... )
