Let's talk about an obscure show, for a moment. Possibly the greatest bit of science fiction ever. It's called Farscape.
Or: a space opera with muppets!
The premise: John Crichton is an astronaut on a test flight for the Farscape shuttle when his shuttle gets shot through a wormhole in space and brings him to a far away universe full of interesting aliens, where he accidentally kills the bro of the head of the army, and lands on a prisoner transport ship full of mutinous prisoners (who turn out to be awesome.)
It's got romance! Hilarity! Muppets! It was co-created by Jim Henson's workshop, and one of the main characters is a muppet/puppet.
Dominar Rygel the 16th. Totally freaking badass. Also? He farts helium.
This is John Crichton (Ben Browder) and Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black... hottest woman ever in the history of evers.) He's a cocky astronaut. She's a badass fighter pilot turned accidental fugitive. They fight a lot and hate each other, but then accidentally fall in love. One of the greatest love stories of all time.
Chiana and D'argo. I totally met the actress who plays Chiana at Marscon a while ago. She is a real sweetheart. Also? Great characters.
This whole thing is up on Netflix Instant. (But I also bought all 4 seasons, because hello! It's a great show! Which my DVD stealing sister currently has...) It's 4 seasons long, plus a mini movie at the end. Also, there's a comic series that takes place after the movie, but I haven't read it yet. Because I fail.
Yes! Watch this! It's great! The ships are epic, the plot is perfect, it's a bit cheesy, but who DOESN'T love cheesy sci fi? (And there's a living ship! With a giant puppet pilot who is the kindest soul in the universe!) FRELL YEAH!
