Show: Firefly
This show is quite literally the greatest show on television ever.
It's a space Western about a group of thieves and fugitives traveling on a smuggling ship together, on the run from the law. It's only 13 episodes long (because Fox is a major douchebag and cancelled it early), but there is also a movie attached called Serenity which is set several months after the last episode of the show.
IT'S AMAZING!!
It was created by the visionary Joss Whedon, who is most famous for his creation of the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Since it's cancellation, it grew to have a cult following, and spawned fan films, RPGs, and charity events. Blah blah blah, politics.
What is so amazing about this show, dear readers, is that in thirteen episodes, this amazing world is created. It's incredibly rich, detailed, and the characters interact flawlessly with. AND THE CHARACTERS. By and far the most detailed and interesting characters created in television history. Since there are nine main characters, nine passengers on the ship, (I think) a lot of work goes into giving these characters back stories, and personalities.
And the ships. Oh the ships!! My ship, (Mal/Inara) while strongly hinted at, doesn't actually work out, mostly because the show was cancelled. (Also it was rumored that one of the characters was in the process of dying of a wasting disease, so she would have kicked it anyway, but still!) But some of them do work out, and they're totally adorable!! (Kaylee/Simon. You know you love it.)
Most importantly though, this show has strong characters. Someone once asked Joss Whedon why he creates such strong female characters, and his answer was "because you're still asking that question." Firefly characters are akin to Xena: Warrior Princess in their badassery. Even Kaylee, who is the non-violent semi-timid one of the group kicks ass when she needs to.
Also, everyone on the damn ship is pretty. EVERYONE. With actors like Nathan Fillion (of Castle) Adam Baldwin (of Chuck) Jewel Staite (of SG:A) Gina Torres (she was in Cleopatra 2525!!) and Morenna Baccarin (of V), it's hard not to spend the entire time just oogling. Even the costumes are pretty and amazing. And I WANT.
I got a chance to watch the first episode in BlueRay once, and homygosh, my mind was blown.
Seriously, watch this show. Right now. Do it. It won't take you very long, it's all up on Netflix Instant, and it's the greatest thing ever. Everrrrrrrrrr.
