Merlin:
Merlin is a British fantasy series based (rather loosely) on the legends of King Arthur, in which Merlin the wizard is Arthur's age, and is actually his manservant. Arthur also starts out the series being prince, and they're both youngish. Characters from the legend show up in various forms: Morgana is Uther's (Arthur's father's) ward. Gweneviere (called Gwen) is Morgana's ladies maid. Mordred is a random little boy and NOT Arthur's son. But it's fun nonetheless! Fabulous, in fact.
I started off watching Merlin, thinking it was really dumb. It was one of those shows I would put on only as background noise to do dishes by , or something I could do while playing facebook games. Then I discovered the fanfiction, and the idea of shipping Arthur/Merlin. THIS IS THE MOST OBVIOUS SHIP IN THE UNIVERSE. And for some reason, it's absolutely delightful. So I got super into fanfiction, starting reading it by the heapful, and writing a bit. It's glorious!
It is the sort of show you can't watch with seriousness, I think. You can't be like "huah! This is an excellent drama with deep characters!" Because it's not. It's pretty men in armor, and sexual tension, and silly humor with sound effects. I found more to love in my second watch-through (mostly while going "oh em gee they are so cute!!" the whole time), and am actually really looking forward to season 5.
My hope for season five is a) a magic reveal (with appropriate angst/Arthur saying "it's okay Merlin, you'll always be in my heart!") and b) I would really love to see Dark!Merlin. Like, Merlin starts to go evil, but then Arthur (and his super gay love) bring Merlin back from the brink and turn him good again. I feel like that was hinted a bit at the end of season 4, but we'll see. Also, I would love to see some serious snogging between Arthur and Merlin, but considering this is a kid's show, I'm guessing we won't get any. But we could always have a "everyone gets slipped a love potion" episode! I also think the chemistry between Arthur and Gwen is TOTALLY CRAP and awkward. Hence all the gay shagging that should be happening.
I also, rather guiltily, RPS (real person ship) the actors who play Arthur and Merlin, Bradley James and Colin Morgan. Mostly because they are adorable, and why the hell not?
Writing and reading the fanfiction for this show has basically kept me sane this year. So thank you, Merlin fan community! You make me giddy.
