Theuns came over and we went on a mission to get my new phone and some KFC. We didn't even try KFC Linwood, Sydenham or anywhere in the city, for obvious reasons. Riccarton Mall? Closed. Riccarton Road? Closed. Northlands? Closed. Basically, all of the KFC is closed. We ended up finding a Warehouse open at Northlands where I could get my phone (I am fussing around charging it and will have to get an old number transferred onto it if possible, then I'll put it in a friends-locked post) and then a while later settled for a chippie that was actually very excellent.
We had to drive two blocks along Bealey Ave at one point. No trucks or anything, but many many cones, along with police officers and soldiers. Reassuringly, they were not armed and didn't seem to be particularly dour. On Brougham St we also passed a line of three or four tanks heading east. There's a lot of rubble, a lot of fencing, some more secure than others. Spray painted signs on walls "NO GO ZONE". It's much worse than September. No one even blinked at the fact that I was walking around clinging at a stuffed purple dog (it was that or the almost-spherical panda and the dog's easier to carry) and probably had a really zonked out expression. Even on that side of town there were a few others that looked the same.
One thing made me wish I had a camera with me: a billboard on the corner of Brougham and Colombo. "Sydenham is open for business!" right in front of a pile of rubble that used to be a lovely stone church.
