Bragging About My Wife

Nov 07, 2009 12:53

Yesterday, the Unbalanced Wife and I spent the morning at the quarterly Board of Trustees meeting for her university. This was the meeting where they voted to implement Domestic Partners benefits for university employees -- by January 1, no less. So that was cool to see.

This is bragging because this never would have happened without a lot of hard work from my wife.

She's the one who started an organization for queer employees. She's the one who met with the President, and the union, and the diversity office, and got them all talking to each other. She's the one who made sure that research happened into what was possible -- because the Michigan constitution *forbids* marital-like benefits for same-sex couples, it's a bit tricky -- and got into the hands of decision-makers.

No one thought it was possible to get this done at this university -- and she did it. In under a year. My wife rocks.

(The ironic part is that this probably won't help my insurance situation at all. The university considers us married. The insurance company considers us unmarried. So I've been denied spousal coverage by the insurance company. And the university considers me ineligible for the newly instituted domestic partners benefits -- because spouses are disqualified to prevent married couples from doubling up on benefits. Sigh.)
