Thanks to those who commented on my last post. Looks like flats/prefolds will be best for us, especially as we are going to try
elimination communication, in which you don't actually want a super-absorbent nappy most of the time. (Have any of you heard of/tried this? I had never heard of it till my best friend A used it with her son, born last year, and raved about it. It may not work, but if we can minimise the amount of poop we're cleaning off Humpie I'll be happy. It also seems to fit with the whole child-led breastfeeding, attachment parenting style that I am aiming for.)
So next questions - how do I tell what to look for in a good flat/prefold nappy? Where can I buy them (and fasteners and covers)? How much should I expect to pay? Is it a crazy idea to just buy some fabric, and cut and hem my own? If I do make my own, how big should the squares be? How do we learn how to fold them?
We saw some (pretty expensive looking, organic trendy) flats in Baby Bunting the other weekend and almost bought them, but were totally unable to find fasteners, and the sales girl was so unhelpful I decided they didn't need our custom. (Note to sales assistants: 'somewhere on that wall over there, you may need to browse a bit' is NOT sufficient customer service for an eight-months-pregnant customer. Especially when a more thorough search than the customer's previous quick scan reveals that desired item is not on the indicated wall, nor the walls on either side. Note to store layout people: put stuff that customers might want together. Amazon can do it, surely you can too!)
