Feeling sniffly today, so made myself some echinacea tea. As it was brewing I thought I had better check if it was safe during pregnancy - some herbs that are normally safe are right out. The internet gave me mixed results; it seems the only study in humans is a 2000 article in Archives of Internal Medicine, which followed 206 matched case-control pairs and didn't find differences in anything important. But there's evidence from animal studies showing echinacea and related plants (like chamomile and feverfew) cause uterine contractions and may be associated with miscarriage.
So I'm being safe, tipping out my tea, and going to drink some hot water. Note to self: bring a lemon and some honey to work next week!
