“Quinn!”
8- year- old Santana yelled for her best friend as she scrambled out of the car and into her best friend's waiting arms. Both girls giggle as Santana's hug knocks them to the ground. They roll around on the ground for a minute, engaged in a full on tickle fight. “Santana!” Her mother calls, “come get your stuff out of the car and then you can go to Quinns.”
An hour later and the girls are side-by-side on Quinns bed, looking at pictures from Santana's family vacation to Disney World. It was the end of summer break and Santana had been gone for almost a month. Her neighbor and best friend had waited impatiently for her to get back.
“Hey San, who's that?” Quinn asked, pointing to a blonde girl with her arm slung around Santana in one of the pictures. Santana, who had been laying back with her head against the headboard sat up to see the picture. “Oh, that's Brittany. We met her family in Florida. They're moving up here and Brittany and her brother are going to school with us.” Quinn wrinkled her nose, not sure how she felt about Santana making friends without her. “Is she nice?”
“Yeah, she's cool. Kinda slow, but whatever. Her brother's really cute though” she responded, reaching over to turn the page to a picture of the two girls, and both of their brothers. Quinn only nodded. “You okay Q? Wanna go watch a movie?” Quinn nodded and smiled. “ What San, didn't get your full of Disney yet?”
A week later and Santana was knocking on Quinns door, shouting for her to hurry up or they'd be late for their first day of third grade. Lima Elementary School was a flurry of activity as kids wearing their new clothes and toting huge, but empty backpacks swarmed everywhere. After Santana's mother had dropped both the girls and Santana's brother Alex off, they went to wait by the flagpole in front of the school before the bell rang. Santana stood on her tiptoes, searching for something unknown to her friend. “Whatcha looking at?” “I gotta find Brittany, I'm supposed to show her around.... But I can't find her.!” Quinn only shrugged in response, not really interested in hearing more about Brittany. Her best friend's new best friend. “There she is!” Santana smiled in relief as she spotted Brittany and her brother, Thomas, talking to Alex, who was pointing towards the two girls. Brittany saw Santana and smiled excitedly, her brother went the other way with Alex while she began making her way over to Quinn and Santana. To Quinns dismay, she saw that the girl was wearing the exact same yellow sundress as Santana. They wore matching clothes now? Quinn thought to herself, looking down at her own pink t-shirt. “Hi Santana!” Brittany squealed, bouncing forward to hug the other girl. Santana said hi just as enthusiastically before Brittany turned to where Quinn was leaning on the flagpole, studiously ignoring the scene in front of her. “Hi! I'm Brittany! What's your name?” The other blond asked, sticking her hand out. Quinn couldn't help but smile as she shook Brittany's hand. “I'm Quinn.” “Nice to meet you Quinn!”
“Hey Santana look! We match!” Santana's response was punctuated by the bell. “Saved by the bell”, Quinn thought smugly.
The three girls sat in lunch together, Santana and Brittany discussing their new teacher and the kids in the class they all shared. Quinn stayed silent, picking at her food. Brittany suddenly turned to Quinn, “what do you think Quinn? Noah Puckerman, hot or not?” Quinn made a face, “ew Puckerman? Definitely not.” Santana said so too, “you should have seen him last year.”
Lunch ended and the three headed off to class. Quinn walked a little behind the other too. Brittany wanted to skip and apparently Santana couldn't say no to the other blond as she half laughed, half skipped with her on the way to class. Quinn jumped when she felt a tug on her braid. She turned around to see none other than Noah Puckerman himself. “What do you want Noah?” Quinn said irritably, completely not in the mood. Noah however just laughed and ran to the head of the line.
The last bell was a relief for Quinn as she hurried out of the classroom to her locker, not bothering to wait for Santana. She collected her things and marched out of the front doors. Unfortunately, she was walking home with Santana today and she knew how much trouble she'd be in if she left without her. So instead she made sure to look as bored and impatient as possible when Santana finally reached her. “Why didn't you wait Quinn?” Quinn just shrugged. She'd done a lot of shrugging that day. Santana seemed to accept her answer and they continued to walk in silence. About halfway home, Quinn felt a small hand slip into hers. She glanced at Santana, who was looking at her, waiting for her to look up. “You're my best friend Q.” Quinn smiled at her best friend and nodded. They continued home, hand-in-hand.
The rest of the school year passed without incident. Quinn gradually warmed up to Brittany and soon they were all three inseparable.
