Failing to make the connection

Background...My new boss is a psychologist, got the doctoral degree and everything. For some years he was in private practice before taking his current position. Last week we discussed the fact that I have Asperger's Syndrome, a condition for which a distinguishing characteristic is a marked lack of empathy or understanding of the emotional response of others. His professionally trained response to that revelation was that the diagnosis was "a good fit."

This week he does my 90 day new-hire evaluation. At the end he tells me that I need to "be aware of how others might respond" to my reading on my kindle while waiting for my programs to run. After a brief pause I said, "That's not really a strength of mine."

He shifted a bit in his seat and then talked at some length about...something. Apparently, the concept of multi-tasking is beyond the reach of some neurotypicals and I should hide the fact that I'm able to read and wait at the same time. That's all the sense I could make out of what he said anyway.
