Ramblings: Side trip to the Twilight Zone?

Aug 13, 2011 09:20

The wife and I drove down to Durham, NC yesterday to see relatives and I'm sure it was via the Twilight Zone.

There is a stretch of Interstate 85 that is perfectly straight and is hemmed in on both sides by tall, dense forest. Yesterday was warm and overcast with a low ceiling and there was a haze on the top of the trees and the horizon that made the road look like it actually disappeared in the distance. There was a stretch of time when no other vehicles were visible in front or in back of us. Interstate drivers should be familiar with the small, blue signs near exits that tell you there's a McDonald's or an Exxon or a Holiday Inn off the exit. We passed a series of them that were Totally Blank. And the kicker was when the Richmond radio station we were listening to faded I hit the scan button on the radio and it searched from the bottom of the spectrum to the top and NEVER found a signal.

In other travel news, we visited our youngest daughter in New Jersey last month and I got lost, both going there and coming home. I have a built-in GPS, I can find places I visited once 10 years ago. I never get lost, but I did in New Jersey.

First of all there's the annoying factor that you can't make a left turn anywhere in the state. It's a series of three right turns. Then there's the fact that the maps I looked at on line showed an intersection of two routes and when I got there, there was no intersection.

We did eventually find our daughter's place. She admits she gets confused by all the right turns and U-turns herself.

Otherwise this summer has been a movie festival. We've caught all the blockbusters.

Thor -- Saw it Imax 3D, but it wasn't worth it. Oh a few scenes, particularly involving the rainbow bridge Bifrost were pretty cool, but I finished the movie with a headache from the weird Imax glasses and the overpowering sound.

X-Men First Class -- It was decent, but I was particular intrigued and touched by the back story for Eric, Magneto.

Greee Lantern -- Saw it in 3D and there were a few good scenes. Generally a very enjoyable flick, particularly where Carol told him "Hal, I've seen you naked. You honestly think I wouldn't recognize you simply because I can't see your cheek bones?"

Transformers -- The wife didn't want to see it, but I did. Also saw it in 3D and there were some scenes where it was very effective. An enjoyable enough movied but some of the scenes in the final battle were rather disturbing.

Deathly Hallows 2 -- Didn't bother with 3D, there just didn't seem to be any compelling reason to see it that way. I liked it, but not as much as part 1 which was much closer to the book. I won't say too much more since maybe someone hasn't seen it yet, although I doubt that. Not enough of Ginny and Harry, as usual. The Gringotts scenes were pretty cool, though. And I loved Helena Bonham Carter playing Emma Watson playing Helena Bonham Carter.

Captain America -- I thoroughly enjoyed this one. A nice stand up and cheer sort of superhero flick. Saw it in 3D and it was worthwhile to do so. I'm really looking forward to next summer's Avengers movie.

Cowboys and Aliens -- My favorite flick so far this summer. It was just lots of fun, and how can you go wrong with Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig fighting big, ugly, nasty aliens with six guns and bows and arrows?

Planning on seeing Planet of the Apes and Conan. Well, my wife doesn't necessarily want to see Conan. And on of the previews during C & A was for a movie called In Time which has a very interesting premise.

Hope everyone's had a good summer so far.
