MORE ON MARRIAGE

Mar 06, 2011 09:51

I want to thank everyone who took time to comment on my ramblings on my daughter's marriage. I appreciated your comments and your kind and encouraging words.

To be clear, it's not that I have an issue with my daughter or her husband, they are obviously quite in love with each other.

I suppose it's uneasiness over how my daughter is going to integrate into the Muslim community. She's always been independent and outgoing, and, unfortunately, that is not regarded as the ideal woman by some members of the Islamic community.

I'm doing my best not to sound anti-Muslim in this, I emphasize that I have no prejudice against Islam as a religion. There are many who regard Islam, Christianity and Judaism as 'People of the Book' who should do their best to understand each other and get along.

I guess what I'm saying is that I worry that she'll be frustrated and upset over some of the social restrictions she'll run into. Also, I'm concerned that since she's adopted Muslim dress, that employers may be more hesitant to give her a fair hearing while she's looking for work. I know this sounds terribly chauvinistic and bigoted, but we all know this sort of prejudice exists and unfortunately probably always will.

Again, I thank all of you who sent me kind words.

If anyone knows of work that two twenty-something linguists would be qualified for, please let me know. They're willing to relocate, believe me.
