Grab the mp3s from the
Very Big Post today if you want'em, I'll be taking them down late this evening.
Télépopmusik - Into Everything (MFA Full Vocal Remix): time for White Mix 2.0. Replaces the TWD remix of "What Else Is There?" of all things, not because I like it better but because it seems to work better. Everyone likes Télépopmusik, right? ...This is a ploy to get people into the electro/minimal corner. XD From personal experience how one comes to appreciate a subgenre is not through exposure to best-examples-of, but remixes - take a song one recognizes and change the sonic palette. It's the sonics one has to learn to parse first.
(I wanted to upload the John Tejada remix of "Don't Look Back" as well, but I don't have it on this computer. Will do that tonight.)
Booka Shade - Mandarine Girl (Album Version): not an edit, not even a condensation so much as a total reimagining.
Powerplant feat. Trout - Turn It Into Gold (Probspot Mix): trance version pretty much. Actually I still like the Madoka breakbeat mix better - it's more austere - but this one has the lush melody (as opposed to the ghost thereof) and you can hear the vocals and everything. ^^;
Belle & Sebastian - The Fox In The Snow: a song everyone already has, just for kicks. Sometimes it's hard to believe this was recorded in 1997 and not 1967. What was it Matthew Fluxblog said - they're just now hitting Thin Lizzy and may go through a grunge period in 2030?

An account of my weekend: on Friday I made a quick stop at Talal's impromptu birthday party at Magic Idea (filling up on nutritious foods like maple walnut mousse cake and taro bubble tea), then went to catch Kobayashi with Cedric on upper Saint Laurent. This was also impromptu. I was tired, Ced hadn't slept in 36 hours, the show ran late and we missed the last metro from Laurier, though both of us subsequently had good luck with buses and managed not to be stranded. The show was fun though: took place at a venue called Main Hall that was smaller than some master bedroom suites I've been in and smelt (as one girl put it) like renovated basement, probably due to the washrooms newly redone in High Ikea particle board, sparkling white tile and white grout. Somehow we even met the new singer of the band when I struck up a conversation with a guy who was taking freelance photos for the label (he saw me scribbling my Yukikaze fic on the back of a printout in between sets). XD I think I would have been more specifically fannish if I hadn't been taken completely off-guard - all I thought was "Gosh, she looks like Noodle!" even though she wasn't Asian - but I did get out that both Ced and I really enjoyed the album.
The opening acts were called Antizario (w/ the sort of emo indie rapper I'd only ever heard of) and Soundclash, and were basically the same kind of music only with different instrumental lineups and not as polished. Kobayashi were really great, though - it wasn't until they took the stage that I remembered how well I knew their songs. XD
Kobayashi - Road Less Travelled
Saturday evening I was at Justin's birthday party, once again at Gibby's for the fourth? year running (if Justin had a motto it would be "so not chaotically aligned"). Had the grilled swordfish steak; think I'll stick to the catch of the day for Justin's next few birthdays too. Then repaired to Stogie's for cigars (not me) and 12$ martinis (I had a Truffletini - vodka, chocolate liqueur, triple sec, strawberry liqueur), over which were swapped war stories from Planetside, WoW, FFXI and who knows what else. I keep forgetting what giant geeks Justin's friends are.** Party of ten including Justin, his brother, Talal, Andrew and five other people I see maybe twice per year (including Sara-who-was-in-my-Comp-Sci-class and Alexei-whom-I've-known-since-Marianopolis), conversation at the table was like a two-month digest of the Penny Arcade blog. x_x Everyone had seen Bleach. It's definitely the Current Big Thing. Justin's favorite character always used to be Zangetsu but for some reason he's switched his affection to Soi Fong. XD
I always enjoy the DJ at Stogie's, he plays "Bizarre Love Triangle" every time I'm there. XD I think the hypothetical Yumichika mix should be something like that - sprightly bongo Latin house remixes of radio pop hits I know well but can't name - except I have much less of that sort of thing than I should.
** That includes me of course.
I actually watched the xxxHolic movie Sunday night, after the Oscars broadcast. It's a typical manga story, with the bulk of the budget and creativity going toward art direction - I loved the house, but then I would. XD The character designs were rather odd and even ropier than the manga equivalents. Yuuko sounded younger than I expected, but the others meshed well with my imagination.
