The Alexandria shooting of Congressman Steve Scalise and five others this morning happened right here in my neighborhood, outside the YMCA on Monroe Street. The gunman, identified as James Hodgkinson, was shot by Capitol Police officers and later died. The Congressman is out of surgery and expected to recover. Oh my gosh. I was reading Dr. Seuss stories to kids today for Read Across America Day (see my most recent two posts). One of the stories I read aloud was one I barely remembered from my own childhood, "The Zax." And it is truly prescient. This story was published in 1961 -- before I was born -- yet Dr. Seuss anticipated the standoff in Congress. ( Read more... )
