Arlene, Texas
Spring, 1867

The storm clouds rolled in from the East, tumbling over one another, a dark swell like a wave in deep waters. They raced across the prairie, crashing against the mountains, setting loose a torrent of rain upon the thirsty plains below. The wind howled like a banshee, bending the treetops to its will, the crack of shattering branches like the sound of breaking bones and Jack lay in his bunk listening to the storm rage.

The thunder boomed overhead making him jump as it echoed against the walls of the bunkhouse and vibrated through his body setting his teeth on edge. The smell of sulfur was heavy in the air, lightning streaking through the night sky setting it ablaze before fading away a moment later and with each flash he glimpsed the room around him, his eyes sweeping over the slumbering men, the storm unnoticed by all but him.

He rolled onto his side as he pulled the blanket up over his shoulders, warming the goose bumps on his flesh as he tried to go to sleep. His lids were heavy and his body tired but his mind just wouldn’t let him rest, his thoughts raging like the storm outside.

Jack looked across the void between his bunk and the next watching Ennis sleep, the other man’s presence a welcome sight. He had missed having him there the last couple nights, his absence having been hard to bear and the reason for it harder still but they had taken a step forward today and Jack hoped they would continue to do so tomorrow and every day thereafter.

His friendship with Ennis was the most important of his life and he didn’t want anything to come between them again, which he guessed was the reason he was lying awake when he should have been asleep.

“Filthy Queer!”

The words reverberated through his mind, Barnes’ voice angry and ugly and Jack sighed not wanting to think about it any more but he couldn’t let it be. He had not told Ennis what Barnes and Billy knew, the fear that Ennis would bolt keeping him quiet but he knew it was wrong. Barnes might be gone but Billy wasn’t and Ennis had a right to know he might be a danger to them even if Jack didn’t think it likely.

He stared at Ennis, so calm and peaceful in sleep and Jack wondered what the chances were he’d stay that way when he found out the truth. He didn’t put too much hope in it but he reckoned he’d find out soon enough as dishonesty wasn’t something Jack could easily digest and it definitely wasn’t conducive to getting a good nights sleep.

Thunder rumbled off in the West and he hunkered down in the bed wishing he were in the bunk beside him instead. He wondered what it would feel like to be held in those arms, nestled against that chest with nothing between them but air. He wondered what it would feel like to be loved by that man and he drifted off to sleep worrying that telling Ennis the truth would mean he would never find out.

The sound of tin plates crashing to the floor was enough to wake the dead but apparently not enough to wake Jack Twist, who rolled over burying himself under his blanket but otherwise showed no sign of rising. Ennis smiled at this as he bent down helping Charlie pick up the dishes, the other man nodding his thanks then he seated himself back on the bench at the table to watch Jack sleep.

Of course he couldn’t see much of Jack, his hair being the only thing visible, sticking up at odd angles over the top of the blanket. Still it was of more interest to Ennis then anything else in the room so he sipped his coffee and continued to stare at the motionless lump on the bed a few feet away.

The other men in the bunkhouse didn’t sleep quite so soundly and they were soon up, dressed and joining Ennis as they waited for their breakfast to cook. The sound of their voices filled the room as they readied themselves for the day and Ennis watched as Jack pulled his pillow over his head in a feeble attempt to block them out.

He couldn’t help chuckling at this as he approached the bed figuring Jack would be more upset at missing a meal then missing sleep. He squatted down beside the bunk, carefully lifting the corner of the pillow to peek underneath it as if he was afraid of what he might find.

“Ya plannin’ to wake up any time soon?”

The pillow came flying at him, hitting him in the face and he fell back on his ass, Jack laughing at him as he did.

“Does that answer your question?”

Ennis threw the pillow back but Jack ducked out of the way, falling back on the bed and Ennis smiled at the sleepy expression on his face before getting to his feet.

“Crazy.” He mumbled to himself as he headed back to the table shaking his head as he went.

Jack lay there yawning as he watched him go, admiring his long legs, the set of his shoulders, his strong back and a couple things that brought a blush to his cheeks. Then he wiped a hand over his face and sat up reaching for his boots. He pulled them on then grabbed his shirt off the end of the bed, slipping it on as well before walking over to the table to join the others.

A cup of Charlie’s coffee cleared away the cobwebs and he was soon chattering away with the other men as he ate, his appetite having returned with a vengeance now that things between he and Ennis had improved.

He knew things weren’t exactly the way they wanted them to be; their desire for one another still unsettled between them but Jack understood better now Ennis’ need for caution and was at least willing to try and be patient. Ennis needed to take things slow and Jack was inclined to follow his lead if for no other reason then to keep from scaring him off.

There were of course other things that might scare him away, Billy’s suspicions about them being the most obvious but Jack knew there was only gonna be so much he could do to reassure Ennis on that account. He just hoped it would be enough.

A second later Billy wandered over to the table taking a plate from Charlie then he stepped out onto the porch to eat. He was feeling unwelcome among the men and a bit humiliated at having been bested by someone he had seen as still wet behind the ears but no one seemed to mind his absence.

He had spent all of the previous afternoon avoiding Jack, doing his best to pretend he didn’t exist and Ennis was glad to see it, not wanting Jack to have to deal with the other man’s constant abuse.

Billy was nothing but a bully and in Ennis’ experience they usually backed down once they were confronted. He hoped that would be the case here but if not he was certain Jack could hold his own against him and Ennis would gladly back his play.

He glanced over at Jack then; unable to suppress the surge of pride he felt at the way he had handled himself in that fight. Not only whipping Billy but doing a fair job of dealing with Barnes as well. Ennis knew it was wrong to feel any joy in such a thing but it had made him realize something about Jack. No matter how many times he got pushed down he always got back up. He was strong and tough and no man was ever gonna break Jack’s spirit.

It had also made him realize something else. That while the dangers they faced were real and considerable he wasn’t facing them alone. Jack was not a helpless boy who needed Ennis to protect him but a man in his own right. He would be there to watch Ennis’ back as much as Ennis would watch his and that was a comforting thought.

Still, he was unsure of what lay ahead for them, the world being what it was. He didn’t want to bring undo risk to himself or Jack by giving in to his desires. He knew it wasn’t gonna be easy though as over the last few days he had come to see that Jack was not someone he was prepared to do without.

Jack laughed at something K.C. said distracting Ennis from his thoughts and he sat watching him, captured by his sparkling eyes and sweet smile once more. A minute later he finished his meal, draining his cup of coffee before standing up from the table. The others did the same then they gathered up their gear and headed outside to start their day.

“I think we should call her sassafras.” Jack said as Ennis climbed out of the corral brushing the dust from his clothes.

“Hell bitch like that don’t deserve no name.” Ennis said gruffly.

“Aww ya ain’t sore at her now are ya Ennis?”

“She tried to stomp me to death. How am I supposed to feel?”

“Oh, she was just flirtin’ with ya is all.” Jack teased.

“Flirtin’ huh? Well I’d hate to see what she’d do if she didn’t like me.”

Jack just laughed at him and Ennis turned watching the big chestnut as she stood in the other corral. She was looking straight at him, her stance challenging and he stared back letting her know she hadn’t got the best of him yet. Then he smiled softly before turning away.

“Sassafras is too long a name for a horse anyway.”

Jack glanced over at him, one eyebrow raised, a small smirk playing across his lips and he saw straight through Ennis’ facade. He acted like he was mad at the mare but Jack could tell how much he admired the horse’s spirit, even if it meant that it made his job harder to do. Timid horses weren’t good for much but hauling freight and Ennis was always gonna prefer one with a little brass to one without.

“Well, ya could just call her sassy for short.” Jack replied smiling.

“Sassy, huh? Sounds like someone else I know.”

Jack chuckled liking the easy way things had fallen back in place, the comfortable feeling he had with Ennis that it seemed not even their brief troubles could effect. Then he looked across the corral at Billy and his smile faltered thinking how the conversation he had yet to have with Ennis might change all that.

“You’re up.” Ennis said shoving him lightly against his shoulder.

“What? Oh.” Jack replied, putting his thoughts aside while he climbed into the corral.

They spent the rest of the morning working with the horses; six of them broke to Ennis’ satisfaction while the rest continued to fight the bit, buck the saddle and otherwise annoy the hell out of the men.

By noon they were ready for a break, the sun hot on the necks and the air dead around them, the wind from last night’s storm long since drifted away. They were eager to head inside and find some relief and when Charlie called them for lunch they didn’t hesitate.

When they entered the building they were assaulted with the smells of fresh bread, roasting beef and stewing tomatoes and they sat down quickly not wanting to give Charlie any excuse to fuss.

They filled their cups with cool water from the pitcher, letting it quench their thirst then they dug in slacking their hunger with the food Charlie had prepared.

“Hey, Ennis ya think you’ll be done with them horses today?” Red asked as he lifted his fork to his mouth.

“Most likely.”

“Good, cause tomorrow, first light I want you and Jack to go into Arlene to pick up the supplies for the chuck wagon.”

“Sure enough.”

“Bull, I want ya to take the other wagon along and pick up the extra rifles and ammunition Mr. Taylor ordered from Sam Miller. He was supposed to get them in a couple days ago. Oh and pick up the extra water barrels at Donovan’s place. He said he’d have them ready today.”

“You bet.” The big man answered nodding his head.

“I want the rest of ya to get your gear in order then Mr. Taylor says ya can have tomorrow afternoon to yourselves.”

The men smiled at this knowing they would need the extra rest before starting out on the drive, the trail to Montana a hard path to travel and not one to take lightly.

“Ride her Ennis!” Jack yelled as he stood on the fence rail waving his hat in the air.

Ennis was sitting atop the chestnut once more, the filly still bucking and fighting the bit but he wouldn’t give in. She was willful and strong but Ennis was stubborn and determined to make her mind.

Another circuit around the corral and she seemed to relent, heeding his will at last and he put her through her paces before finally climbing down from the saddle.

“Ya sure showed her who’s the boss.” Jack said smiling at the other man.

Ennis smiled back then handed Hank the reins but before he took another step the horse reached out grabbing hold of him with her teeth and Ennis jerked away, crying out, his hand flying to his back as Hank pulled the horse away.

“Ennis, ya alright?”

“Yeah.” He hissed, a grimace on his face as he turned eyeing the horse. She stood staring back at him; defiance in her eyes and he just shook his head and headed for the gate.

“Are ya hurt?” Jack asked coming over to him but Ennis just shook his head and walked passed him toward the stable.

“Think she got a piece of him.” Bull said staring after him.

“What?”

“There’s blood on that shirt.”

“He said he was alright.” Jack replied turning to look toward Ennis, concern in his eyes.

“Jack ya go on over to the bunkhouse and tell Charlie Ennis is bit and he’ll give ya what ya need to tend that wound.”

“But…”

“Go on now.”

Jack did as he was told hurrying off to the bunkhouse while the other men turned back to their work eager to finish up for the day.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“God damn it!”
The horse had nipped him good and Ennis was furious with himself for not having been more careful with the mare. She was a smart filly but she had a stubborn streak a mile wide and a temper to match. She was never gonna be fully tamed and that was something he should have remembered before turning his back on her.
He tossed his torn shirt on the workbench and reached up, untying his kerchief from around his neck. He pressed it against the wound on his lower back, sucking in a breath as he did then pulled it away a minute later relieved to see there was only a spattering of blood on the fabric.
“Here let me.”
“What?”
“Charlie said to make sure to clean that real good and wrap it up.” Jack replied pushing the door to the tack room shut as he entered.
“Thanks, but…uh…I can do it myself.“ Ennis said nervously, crossing his arms in front of his bare chest, feeling somewhat self-conscious.
“Ya can’t even see it.” Jack replied as he forced his eyes off Ennis and set the bucket of water, soap and linen bandages he carried on the workbench.
“I don’t need no help, Jack.”
“Stop being so stubborn and just sit down.” Jack said his hands resting on his hips.
Ennis stared at him for a minute frowning then he gave in sitting down on the small stool, his back to Jack as he leaned his forearms on top of the table. Jack looked over the muscular expanse of Ennis back taking in every freckle before looking down at the wound marring its perfection.
“Uh…you’re…you’re gonna have to pull your pants down.”
“What?” Ennis asked, looking over his shoulder, his eyes wide.
“Well the…the wound goes down below the top of your pants so your gonna have to…uh…pull them down…”
“I ain’t takin’ my pants off Jack.”
“Well, ya don’t have to take them off just undo them and…uh…pull them down a little bit so I can see…uh…the wound.”
Ennis huffed loudly as he turned away not saying a word. He mulled the situation over for a second then stood up suddenly, unfastening the button on the waistband of his pants. He sat back down a second later pulling the pants over his hip. Jack swallowed hard, licking his lips feeling his heart speed up as the top of Ennis’ bare ass became visible making him stare.
“Well?”
“Oh, right.” Jack said coming out of his stupor.
He reached for one of the washrags he had dropped into the bucket of water then ran it over the bar of soap building up a lather before pressing it to the wound. Ennis hissed arching his back slightly from the pain and Jack pulled the cloth away.
“Sorry.”
“It’s…it’s alright. Just git it done.”
Jack stood there for a minute looking at him then reached out unable to help himself, the fingertips of his left hand brushing slowly down Ennis’ back. They both shivered at the touch, panting softly, the contact making them both feel dizzy and Jack laid his hand against the warm flesh, smooth beneath his palm.
Then he ran the washrag over the wound once more taking better care, not wanting to hurt Ennis a second time. When he was finished cleaning the injury he set the washrag down reaching for the second one still in the bucket, using it to rinse the wound clean.
“Ya…ya done?” Ennis asked his voice shaky.
“Almost. Just need to wrap it up. Can ya turn this way?”
Ennis took a deep breath then swiveled on the stool turning to face him and Jack knelt down between Ennis’ spread knees sitting on his heels. Ennis' breath hitched at the sight and he could feel his heart pounding as his mouth went dry. He licked his lips and tried to get a hold of himself but he knew it wasn’t working.
“Hold your arms up.”
Ennis did as he was told and Jack gently pressed the end of the linen wrap over the wound. He held it there as he unrolled the rest across Ennis’ stomach making the muscles twitch slightly before he leaned in to wrap it around his back.
Ennis could feel Jack’s hair tickling his chest each time he moved forward and he swallowed hard trying to ignore the tingling feeling it set off in him. The feel of Jack’s arms circling him as he pulled the linen around his waist didn’t help either and he was soon breathing hard.
He leaned forward unable to resist, Jack’s nearness driving him mad and he breathed in deep taking in his scent, the smell of him making Ennis ache. He shuddered a second later as Jack moved, his body brushing along the inside of Ennis’ thigh and he felt himself grow hard.
Jack’s hands shook as he tore the bandage tying off the ends to secure it in place then he set back on his heels not daring to look up, his face feeling flush. His own breath was ragged, his insides quivering and he bit his lip as he tried not to give in to the urges he was having afraid of driving Ennis away once more.
“Done.” Jack said as he started to rise but Ennis’ hand on his face made him stop and he looked up finally, a question in his eyes.
Ennis’ thumb stroked his cheek, their eyes locked as his hand slipped around Jack’s neck pulling him in. It was the only answer Ennis could give and the only one Jack needed.
Their mouths met, warm and needful, barely touching as they both moaned, Jack leaning forward, hands sliding back along Ennis’ thighs as he responded to the kiss. His eyes closed as his tongue slipped between parted lips, over teeth and gums tasting Ennis for the first time, making him want more.
In another second Ennis’ arms were around his waist pulling Jack up as he stood, pushing him against the door both hands on his face, in his hair, on his throat and Jack clung to him, his hands on Ennis' back sliding over smooth skin and soft linen to what lay beyond.
He slipped his hands under the waistband of Ennis’ pants, his fingers gripping the taut flesh, squeezing his ass as he pulled him closer. The friction between them sent sparks through their bodies and they moaned again, moving against each other, the rough fabric of their trousers doing most of the work for them.
Ennis pressed his hips against Jack, his whole body throbbing, his need for release overpowering every other thought and Jack thrust back, his own need as fierce. They were both panting now, mouths parting only to find each other seconds later as the kiss becoming urgent and hungry, both seeking something from the other that each wanted to give.
Ennis pulled his mouth away kissing Jack’s neck, panting his name and Jack reached up holding him in his arms, one hand in his hair, fingers weaving through his curls as his hips bucked both of them crying out only seconds apart as they came.
They stood where they were, knees week and bodies shaking, their breath harsh in their ears as they waited for the pounding of their blood to subside then Ennis groaned softly burying his face against Jack’s shoulder.
“I’m sorry Jack…I shouldn’t of...” He whispered as he pulled away, leaning against the workbench, palms pressed firmly against the dusty surface, his shoulders hunched and his head bowed.
Jack stared at his back, feeling somewhat dazed then swallowed hard, pushing away from the door and walking over to him.
“Ennis.”
“Why can’t I stop feeling this way? Why I gotta want ya like this?” He asked his voice rough with too much emotion.
“Ennis, it’s alright.”
The other man just shook his head but Jack wasn’t having that and he reached out touching Ennis’ face.
“Look at me.”
“I can’t…what I done.”
“Look at me Ennis.” He said forcing his head around. “It’s alright.”
He leaned in kissing him softly and Ennis tried to pull away but Jack wouldn’t let him wrapping his arms around his waist, keeping him close. Then he pulled back looking Ennis in the eye and smiled.
“So ya ain’t mad?”
“Why would I be mad?” Jack asked confused.
“Cause what I done. What I made ya…”
“Ya didn’t make me do nothin’ Ennis we done it together. Besides… that was the best kiss I ever had.” He said smiling from ear to ear.
Ennis ducked his head, his cheeks heating up as he slipped his arms around Jack burying his face in his neck.
“God, what ya do to me.” He whispered as he kissed Jack’s throat.
Jack arched his neck, moaning softly, liking the feel of all things Ennis then he opened them abruptly a second later the sound of Red’s voice finally reaching them.
“Ennis ya in here?”
Ennis pulled away from Jack in a panic, fastening his pants and grabbing for his shirt.
“Uh…yeah. I’m here.”
“Oh, there ya are.” Red said as Ennis opened the door just a fraction.
“Bull said one of the horses took a hunk out of ya. Ya alright?”
“Yeah…uh…it wasn’t that bad just nipped me is all.” He said pulling his fingers free of Jack’s as he played with them behind the door.
“Ya clean it out good? Horse bite can turn ugly quick.”
“Yeah, well…uh…”
“I cleaned it up for him.” Jack said pulling the door open the rest of the way much to Ennis’ surprise.
“Oh, hey Jack. Well that’s good. Don’t want him gettin’ sick. Gonna need him fit.”
“Oh he’s very fit.”
“Uh…shouldn’t ya be gettin’ back to work Jack?” Ennis said changing the subject as he pushed him out the door, his heart racing. Jack just laughed.
“Guess so. Unless there’s somethin’ else ya need me to do for ya.” He said trying not to smile.
“I can’t think of nothin’.” Ennis glared.
“Ok.” Jack replied looking innocent.
“Well now Charlie said supper is just about ready so ya can forget about doin’ any more work today.”
“Well, I guess I’ll just go git cleaned up then. I’m feelin’ kinda messy.”
Ennis’ eyes widened, darting toward Red but the man didn’t seem to think the comment odd.
“Well, I’ll walk out with ya. Are ya comin’, Ennis? Don’t want the rest of the boys to eat it all before we git there.”
“Yeah, uh..I’ll…I’ll be there in a minute.”
Ennis closed the door to the tack room leaning against it wondering how on earth he was ever gonna get through the night let alone the drive with a devil like Jack to contend with. It was bad enough he couldn’t control himself but how the hell did you control someone like Jack Fucking Twist.
Then shaking his head he decided to do what he always did. Ride it out and hope he didn’t get thrown.
