26) Ian Whates, ed., disLOCATIONS, 2007
Newcon Press's second anthology, nine varied stories on the theme of displacement that range from the speculative to the uncompromisingly science fictional. I particularly love the sharp piece of faan fiction which gave Whates the idea for this book, Amanda Hemingway's 'The Convention', as well as
fastfwd's 'Among Strangers'. But for me the best story is still
desperance's
'Terminal', which IMHO should have won this year's BSFA Award for best short story. Why? Its sensawunda appeals to the heart, whereas in Ken Macleod's
'Lighting Out', which did win, it appeals to the head and as a result left me feeling somewhat meh in comparison.
