I went to Smith College (a women's college in Massachusetts) this past weekend. I guess the proof that I really am half Asian is the fact that I feel completely comfortable in a room full of nobody other than Asians. Whenever I'm in a room full of people of a single race (other than Asian or Caucasian) I tend to feel slightly out of place. Even though I don't speak Chinese and look mostly white I feel completely at home in a sea of Asian faces.
That isn't to say that I don't like diversity. When I first came to the academy the sea of white faces kind of bothered me as high school had accustomed me to being in a much more diverse environment. It's kind of interesting that while Asians are over represented at most top tier institutes of high education at the Coast Guard Academy they seem to be severely under represented.
Going to a house party at Smith was very interesting. First off, I have never been carded that seriously at a house party before. They meticulously checked my ID and then gave me a wristband. It didn't really bother me since I'm 21, but I felt bad for the guy was underage. The party was a red light / green light party. If you're taken you wear red, and if you're looking for someone you wear green. The idea is that if a girl is wearing red you probably don't want to hit on her because, well, she's taken. The problem was that if she was wearing green you probably didn't want to hit on her either because she was most likely a lesbian and not interested in you (well, depending on your gender she may be interested in you, but she sure as hell wasn't interested in me).
