Peter cleaned up Norman's secret office in record time. He wanted to get as far away from the room as possible. It was surprising that Norman's spirit decided to leave Peter alone during the clean up, considering he had made his presence known while he had Pete locked in the room earlier. It wasn't that Peter didn't believe that the ghost thing was possible, but experiencing first hand had left him feeling uneasy. No wonder Harry seemed to be walking the fine between sanity and insanity at times if he had to deal with Norman's restless spirit on a regular basis.
Once he was out of the office, he did a quick search of the parking lot that the hidden door lead too. He didn't find anything out of the ordinary, so Peter hit the streets to patrol. The list of clubs that Connor had listed on the phone were fresh in his mind, so Peter spent most of the evening searching clubs for anyone who could lead him to the local drug dealers. After witnessing Harry's reaction in the office, Peter was convinced that Harry was once again abusing drugs. There was no other explanation for the violent outbursts, the dilated pupils, and the amped up behavior that Harry was displaying. If he could find the creep who sold the drugs then maybe he could test it out and see if it was laced with anything that could have caused Harry's reaction. Not that regular drugs couldn't be the cause of it, but something told Peter that Harry almost seemed to be on a steroids kind of high. The aggression and sudden muscle gain could be explained by that as well.
After asking around and shaking down a few local dealers, he came to the conclusion that whoever Harry was getting his supply from wasn't a club kid. No one would have protected his secret that well. Not the way Spider-man was tearing through the clubs. It wasn't until just a little after sunrise that he saw the
article about the Green Goblin being back. All those theories of steroids and recreational drugs went flying out the window as reality set in. Norman had blackouts when he first started testing the enhancement drugs on himself. How could Peter have been so blind to what was right in front of him? Because it was Harry. He didn't want to believe that Harry would pick up where his father left off. Peter could not stand the thought of taking on Harry behind the mask. He could not handle not being able to save his best friend when he's already failed to save his best friend's father.
Of course it didn't help that Jameson had used the event to trash Spider-man. Peter would be dealing with New Yorkers turning on him again while trying to figure out how to deal with Harry behind the mask. He was going to have to talk to Connor and come up with a plan. He hated the idea of sending Harry away, but if the article was accurate and Harry was behind the mask? Then he was a danger to himself and everyone in the city. People already died because Peter was shaking down local drug dealers instead of patrolling the city like he was supposed to do.
He couldn't help but hope that maybe this was a set up. He would use his connections at the Bugle to check out the witnesses and the photographer who caught the shot of the Goblin. Maybe someone was framing Harry, but who would have the information to do that? No one knew that Norman was the Goblin so why would they go after Harry? All roads were leading to the same conclusion and it made Peter sick to believe it.
Harry Osborn had put on the mask, and now Spider-man was going to have to take on Green Goblin 2.
