It would appear that this step has completed itself, the call answered without choice or preference. Suddenly the receiver appears on the cradle, and before we can even begin our period of stunned silence abject dismay, the conversation has drawn to a close. Sometimes now the Universe grieves alongside the bereaved. Standing with us today, even the Creator has taken the time to shave and preen in honor with all due respect of the exanimate. The grief follows us home, reminds us that even still we have holes in the shingles, dirty dishes in the sinks, moments to live cars crying desperately for waxing.
We sit in Make-up, awaiting the next Act, browsing through scripts long ago shelved. Nineteen years ago today, the Creator removed His hat, bowed His head, and wept with us. And when we were barely eight, and mostly across the country, on this day, He removed his hat, threw it high in the air, and toasted the beautiful undrunk bride and groom.
