This might be a seriously silly question, but I just need to let it out: so what is exactly the more predominant thought on the whole Rose issue?

I mean, from where I am, no one really watches DW (no one I know, at least) so I have no clue as to what's the "popular" opinion on Rose. I've been force-feeding my best friend some New Who (she's seen a bit of S1 and S2) and she's not particularly fond of her. But that's one opinion out of a billion, I was just wondering what it's like over where you are?

It's not a silly question at all. And it really depends where you hang out. The corners of LJ which I frequent are occupied by mostly ardent Martha fans. But the non-LJ areas of the net that I frequent tend to be occupied by a lot of people who think Rose is the best thing since sliced bread and the "Ultimate Companion" in the whole of the Whoniver EVAH ( ... )

I can understand how people may believe that Rose is/was great, I really liked her in S1, after all. But S2? Nope. And after seeing S3 with Martha? Rose pales in comparison. But still, I can respect all the Rose love. I can't really say the same for RTD though, I've seen him on a few TW Declassifieds and some of the DW ones (I can't remember the name for it right now) and he just rubs me the wrong way sometimes. I'll shut up now before I get virtually kicked in the arse by someone out there, the internet is a brutal place :p

Actually you're pretty safe to say what you like on my LJ - not many of my FList are RTD supporters and anyone who's not on my FList will get their comments screened before I post them, so if they were rude to you, I'd delete the comment...

DW Confidentials, they're called. I confess I've yet to watch many of them (I only watched the "Smith and Jones" one and the one DT himself did for Blink when they aired) and although the "Confidential Cutdowns" are on the boxset, I've yet to watch them (way too busy writing !)

Ah, there you go! I used to ignore the Confidentials 'coz I just didn't feel the need to know what happens behind the scenes but I've been suffering from withdrawals so I got into them :) I've been grabbing all the S2 Declassifieds though, and RTD's always blabbering on about how awesome he is, lol. I think what irked me most was his comment on Tosh being a strong woman so he wants to stay away from her. I'm probably misquoting him but I'll check again, but that really showed me how off he can get..

I'm feeling rather relieved I've not bothered listening to / watching the Declassifieds, then !

MARTHA is a strong woman - idiot man !

These people really need to watch the classic series from 1973 to 1976 (series 11 - 14) and series 3 of New Who in great detail.

Yes they do - but it'd be a waste of time to suggest it because they prefer to live in their own happy bubble...

I got abuse again today for defending my right not to worship RTD on the grounds that I have issues with his characterisation of people of colour. The "he's the first person to give the Doctor a coloured Companion therefore he can't be racist" argument is really feeble.

I've got issues with him because at times he honestly seems as if he lives in a dream world as far as some of his scripts go. They verge on madness.

It's an interesting question. Maybe I'm wrong, but from what I've seen on LJ, Rose tends to be worshipped by new fans who see her as their analogue in situations. Which is not wrong; that's always the companion's job. But having no basis from classic as to how a companion should be treated, they glom onto how speshul the Doctor finds her.

Conversely, many of the Martha fans I know on LJ seem to have some background in the classic series, or at least with its themes and MO: No companion is higher than another. (I wish I had a proper "Loves Them All" icon up at the moment, but oh well.) I dislike RTD for making Ten mourn Rose for so long; companions have died and gotten less tears. He should be happy she's safe, with friends/family, and successful.

That's a good point actually - I don't know (m)any fans of Rose who are also fans of Classic Who. When you look back at how the Doctor responded to some Companions' deaths/departures in Classic Who, it's astonishing to find him making so much of Rose's departure, even if she is a stand-in for his Gallifrey grief/angst/Emo.

Even without watching the classic series prior to seeing S2 and all the Rose-related angst afterwards (I came into DW through the new series), it felt wrong to me that Ten should be all emo about Rose having everything she wanted, worse, the way Rose reacted to having everything she wanted, yet still feeling like it's not enough.

Now, having seen some of the classic series, it's even more obvious to me that somewhere RTD went overboard with the epic and instead came up with just hot, steamng pile of fail. I'm so sad that he put me off of Rose, and it's so hard to get back my old love for her.. I'm going to go and watch some of S1 now *pets S1 eps*

I confess I never liked Rose all that much from the outset - I found it almost impossible to identify with her, apart from her early delight in travelling through Time and Space in that big blue box... I prefer her with the Ninth Doctor though - at least he wasn't mushy and giggly...

So you'd prefer Ten being mushy and giggly with Martha? :P

I've never really identified with Rose either. While she lacked strong book smarts, she was inutive and thought on her feet. These can be great traits in a companion (Ace), but Rose was too wildly emotional to make it work right. I also dislike how she treated Mickey at times.

I immediately saw myself in student Martha, more introverted, rational, and thinking before she acts. I understand the awkward nerdiness behind the beautiful woman. And although it was terribly written, I admire her triumph without violence.

Actually no. I don't want mushy, giggly Ten at all...

I'm not a beautiful woman, but I can empathise with her awkward nerdiness. And yes, the introverted, rational, thinking student was what appealed to me.
