Top 5 Fannish things meme - part 1

Aug 09, 2009 11:37

I've had quite a few responses to the meme, and the majority of the questions are below the labelled cuts. I'm still working on two of them (one features a picspam, and the other requires more thought).

For garpu: My Top 5 Big Finish audios:

1 - The Adventures of Luther Arkwright - Mark Wright. Three hours of dimension-hopping timey-wimeyness with David Tennant? Yes please!
2 - Jubilee - Rob Shearman. A parallel Earth story with Six and Evelyn, and deliciously evil Martin Jarvis and Rosalind Ayres. (And much more heart-wrenching than 'Dalek', from which it was adapated by the author.)
3 - The Chimes of Midnight - Rob Shearman (again!). A spooky tale set at Christmas featuring Eight and Charley, a host of strange servants - and a very odd house.
4 - The Company of Friends - Lance Parkin; Stephen Cole; Alan Barnes; Jonathan Morris. Four independent short stories featuring Eight & Benny, Eight & Fitz, Eight & Izzy and Eight & Mary Shelley. I didn't enjoy the Fitz story, but the other three were a lot of fun.
5 - Shada - Douglas Adams & Gary Russell. The audio version of the incomplete TV serial, this time featuring Eight and Romana II. Features a Time Lord teaching at Cambridge University, a megolomaniac criminal, and a prison planet.

Honourable mentions to: Unbound: Sympathy for the Devil - Jonathan Clements; UNIT: The Wasting - Iain McLaughlin & Claire Bartlett; Companion Chronicles: Old Soldiers - James Swallow (featuring the Brig); Companion Chronicles: The Blue Tooth - Nigel Fairs (featuring Liz Shaw); and Companion Chronicles: The Doll of Death - Marc Platt (featuring Jo Grant).

This list is subject to change as I listen to more of the audios. But right here and now, that's the top 10!

For catholicphoton: My Top 5 Classic Who planets I'd like to visit:

1 - Gallifrey - I wouldn't want to make a long stay, mind!
2 - Biblios - a planet-sized library? Yes please!! (from the comic strip "War of the Words".)
3 - Florana - the Doctor says it's one of the most beautiful planets in the Universe.
4 - Carsus - another planet with a massive library (mentioned in 'Spiral Scratch').
5 - Diadem - apparently the most relaxing planet in the Galaxy! (mentioned in 'The Crystal Bucephalus'.)

I figure with all the running about we'd do, the Doctor and I would be glad of some relaxing places to visit!

For fourzoas: My Top 5 one-off characters in Classic and New Who:

Classic Who

1 - Brigadier Bamberra - in 'Battlefield' - because she totally pwns!
2 - Lt John Andrews - in 'The Carnival of Monsters' - I confess, this is mainly because the character's played by Ian Marter (better known as Harry Sullivan in the first Fourth Doctor season)!
3 - Duggan - the detective in 'City of Death' - he's ridiculously quick to knock people out, but he's got a soft heart.
4 - D.84 - one of the eponymous Robots in 'Robots of Death'.
5 - Adam Colby - one of the palaeontologists in 'Image of Fendhal' (I confess this is mostly lost_spook's influence!)

New Who
1 - Ida Scott - the science officer in 'The Impossible Planet' & 'The Satan Pit' - she'd make a great companion.
2 - Jabe - the tree lady from the Forest of Cheem, as seen in 'The End of the World' - she and Nine would make a fascinating team.
3 - Professor Yana - I like the Master's human persona WAY more than I like the Master!
4 - Kathy Nightingale - I know this is probably an unpopular opinion, but I prefer Kathy to Sally Sparrow.
5 - Private Ross Jenkins - we love Ross! I refuse to believe he died in 'The Poison Sky'.

I wasn't sure whether fourzoas intended me to combine Classic and New Who, but I opted to do them separately.

For dk323: My Top 5 favourite Torchwood moments:

1 - Jack's response to the news that his VIP has arrived: 'Suddenly in an underground mortuary on a wet night in Cardiff, I hear the song of a nightingale - Miss Martha Jones.' (in 'Reset')
2 - Ianto's reaction to the credentials presented by the as-yet-unseen Dr Martha Jones (also in 'Reset').
3 - The scene where Owen and Martha are working together in the Hub (also in 'Reset'. What? I'm batshit for Martha, you knew that already!)
4 - Owen attempting to drown himself, even though he's already dead (in 'A Day in the Death').
5 - Jack stealing *the* flashiest car he could find (in 'Torchwood: Children of Earth - Day 3').

abstruse_fangrl (who used to be ebbyzone): My Top 5 novels/stories in New Who, Classic Who, SJA and TW - I'm going for audio novels as well as print novels:

Classic Who
1 - The Scales of Injustice (Three, Liz)
2 - Harry Sullivan's War (Harry, Sarah Jane)
3 - Theatre of War (Seven, Ace, Benny)
4 - Scream of the Shalka (REG!Nine, Android!Master)
5 - The Empire of Glass (One, Steven, Vicky, Irving Braxiatel)

New Who
1 - Peacemaker (Martha, Ten)
2 - The Pirate Loop (Martha, Ten)
3 - Beautiful Chaos (Donna, Ten)
4 - Prisoner of the Daleks (Ten)
5 - Shining Darkness (Donna, Ten)

I'm not that familiar with TW novels/audio novels, and as there are only a handful of SJA audio novels (and no original print novels), I'm combining the two:

Torchwood & Sarah Jane Adventures

1 - The Twilight Streets (TW novel)
2 - Ghost House (SJA audio novel)
3 - The Time Capsule (SJA audio novel)
4 - Another Life (TW novel)
5 - The Glittering Storm (SJA audio novel)
