At the end of the second day on the job, morale is high. While I took a pay cut to take this job, it provides me with a much higher quality of life-- or, it will if things even confinue like this. I have cause to believe it will get even better.
I'm now the webmaster/editor for a small company that specializes in medical equipment. As of right now, that means I've been doing a lot of tedious photo optimization and adwords keyword maintenance. Nothing that's been a whole lot of fun. But I really like the people I've met so far, everyone in this small company of about 25 seems eagar to introduce themselves, to say hi, and to welcome me to the company. The rather elderly owner has even come by to welcome me twice! I haven't met the CEO yet, he's been out of town at a conference, but he used to be an IT guy, so I'm confident he won't be a Pointy Haired Boss.
I think, while the relaxed work environment, the small garden with benches, the ability to work outside, and the pet-friendly atmosphere is nice, the most promising thing about this job is their apparent willingness to listen to the employees. I think I could grow a lot in this company and really make a difference and do a good job that actually has results. Those things more than anything else will contribute to my job satisfaction.
Of course, it certainly doesn't hurt that the position is a perfect match for not only my skillset and interests now, but for the development type work I'd like to do in the future. It looks like when I'm ready for a big dev project, the company will be ready for me to do so. My manager has been extremely encouraging about future dev opportunities.
Also, I got to take my laptop outside and work. In lovely, sunny, 84-degree weather, you can't beat that with a stick.
