Good weekend.
Friday night, I went to the Whitney with
blue_infernian. It was free. We saw the
Buckminster Fuller exhibit. I did some sketches of it in my journal. Then we saw some of the permanent collection. Hurrah, Edward Hopper!
After eating dinner, we walked home with a couple friends we met along the way. In front of the post office, the
Atlantic Monthly was shooting a documentary. We agreed to be interviewed all together and signed release forms. We were asked questions like, "Is Google making up stupid?" and "Should women settle?" We discussed the questions among ourselves and answered. It was an awesome experience. The documentary is supposed to be available online. I wonder when?
Saturday, I went around to the galleries.
Mike Bayne at the
Morgan Lehman Gallery makes these wonderful, photo-realistic/high-def paintings. Because the paintings are about the size of photographs, I couldn't tell they were paintings until I saw the brush strokes.
The most recent collages and other work by
Martha Rosler is currently at yet another gallery, complete with a DDR machine and quarter-taking-turn-style in front; perhaps a commentary on capitalism? Honestly, I would have been all too happy to play that DDR game if I wasn't hurrying around with other people at the time.
While I would love to re-visit Rosler's exhibition, I would also like to return to the show Every Man's Life is a Fairytale. The artists include
Amy Cutler and
Kiki Smith, both of whom have a fairly illustrative style. It's very appealing. (
machi_neko, if you see this post, check these artists out!)
Kimi Sakaki also has some nice paintings on display at Kips Gallery. They are very violent and horrifyingly cute.
Amy Wilson's work was on display at another gallery and is sensitive and lovely.
My favorite artist of the day though was definitely
Cecelia Condit. The
films I saw on display are macabre but kind of hilarious, too. I'm considering going back to buy the DVD.
Sunday, I worked at my internship and afterward met
blue_infernian at the
Broadway Flea Market. I came late so I didn't see much to buy. But! I got free plays!
Now that I'm looking back at the weekend, it feels like I've done more than I think I have. Wow.
Anyway, I've been thinking a lot about ideas for the upcoming
NaNoWriMo. Brainstorming is proving to be a tricky process, this year. There are several ideas I want to do but I can only pick and develop one of them. Huh.
