Long story short, on Friday I smashed my left thumb while closing a car door. It could have been worse; the point of impact was about halfway along the nail-covered part, thus shielding the bone to a degree and preventing a fracture, and far from the joint which may have resulted in dislocation. But, it also could have been better: the door hit hard enough to break a myriad of blood vessels, causing a large release of blood which, being trapped by my Sally Hansen-hardened nail, built up until the pressure was truly unbearable. I finally went to the doctor last night, whereupon my nail was cauterized open in two spots and much of the blood was released. Sadly, from the sensations I've been feeling, my nail is no longer attached, and will likely pop off the moment I remove this band-aid. It's creepy as hell to lose a nail, but I'm told it's no big deal as long as I keep the area covered and don't look at it. Ah well, could've been worse. Still, it's not going to be fun unloading my items this Saturday.
Second item of business: stupid people. Well, not so much "stupid people" as "people doing stupid things". It's sad, really; young people, in fact people in general, encounter something in their lives which sucks, and it makes them unhappy. This is nothing new of course, and pretty much everyone can sympathize with a bad break-up, a speeding ticket, or damaging an important part of the hand just days before much manual labor. Bad shit happens, okay? It happens to everyone, and we all want it over with as soon as possible, right? This is where it gets me: people SAY they want to feel better, but they don't DO what will make them feel better. Instead, they chose to extend their period of unhappiness by getting shitfaced and putting off the resolution period for another day. I could name a lot of you readers as being guilty of this, and even I myself am guilty, what with my compulsive eating while watching every movie I own just to pass the time until I feel neutral enough to get on with my life.
But the point is, you're not helping yourselves. Alcohol and drug use don't make your problems go away, they don't make you forget about them. They just extend the period of unpleasantness by making your mind procrastinate on the healing process. What would you rather do, dwell on a low grade for a while and actually think about how you can improve it within the grading term, or bemoan your misfortune between shots? You say you want things to get better, but what have you done to improve your state of mind for the long-term? Think on it. We all should, including me.
Thirdly, I feel the need to comment on the whole "Who Killed JonBenet?" media frenzy. I mean yeah, it's a shame that a little girl died, and it's sickening that there are people out there who would harm children. It makes you want to call in a Satanist vigilante group, doesn't it? But the whole Ramsey case just plain gets on my nerves. I never like high-profile cases, but this one rules all.
What makes this murder so special? Oh wait, I forgot: Americans only like stories about sexy, white, rich girls. JonBenet was white. She was rich as hell. And above all, she WAS sexy. They show clips from pageants she was in, old photos . . . her parents had her in clothes and makeup similar to what you'd expect from a magician's assistant in a Las Vegas act. The girl was dolled-up like a high-class whore. Sorry, it's nasty, but it's true. I mean, if I were John and Patsy Ramsey, I for one would be ashamed to see that those pictures were making it on the national news. Barring the whole possibility that the parents killed her, or were involved in her death, why did no CPS agents confront the Ramsey's at any of these beauty pageants and whisk the girl away? That sort of crap has got to be detrimental to the development of a human being. Even if it doesn't send a signal to pedos that, "My daughter is a piece of hot meat," it tells the child that she is an object. JonBenet's whole childhood was stripped from her, and she was taught through example that her mind and heart meant nothing, and that she was only as good as she was beautiful. This sort of demeaning, exploitative treatment is okay, and yet parents can have their kids taken from them for practicing esoteric religions? This world is fucked up.
In conclusion, Mason sucks for making ALL upperclassmen move into their rooms on the same day. We're paying an extra three hundred dollars this term WHY?
