Love is Weird
By Perpetual Motion
The problem with being corporeal, Bob thinks, is that if he nearly forgets his skull on his way out the door, the jerk backwards almost always makes him fall. Harry has taken to keeping pillows near the door, in hopes that Bob wouldn’t fracture anything when he lands.
“That is hardly necessary.”
“You have a bruise on your butt the size of an orange,” Harry argues. “It can’t do any harm to try not to get a matching set.”
He hates it that Harry is right, but he has to admit the pile of pillows does help remind him to make sure he’s collected all his necessitates before leaving the apartment. It’s strange, after so many years of not touching things just how much he needs to have to leave the apartment. Keys? Check. Wallet? Check. Change for a payphone? Check. Coat, hat, and gloves? Check. Skull? Crap. As he circles back one afternoon to grab his skull before leaving for the store, he catches Harry in the act of dressing it up.
“What are you doing?” Bob asks. Harry gives a little yelp of surprise and nearly drops Bob’s skull on the floor of the lab.
“Nothing,” Harry says, attempting to tuck something under his arm.
“Are you…” Bob steps forward and plucks a scrap of red fabric out from under Harry’s arm. He holds it up and looks at it. There’s a crooked strip of white fabric sewn along the edge of the red, and when Bob shakes it out, he realizes it’s a hat.
“It was supposed to be funny,” Harry said with a half-grin. “I knew you’d have to track back for it, so I figured you’d get a laugh.”
Bob inspects the little hat and feels himself smiling. “You show your affection in odd ways.”
“You keep thinking I’m creeped out by it,” Harry says. “I see you try and hide it. I just…I wanted you to know I don’t care.”
“It’s unsettling,” Bob says. “I have assumed it is, at least.”
“Yeah, I don’t know why that is,” Harry replies. “I mean, it’s just part of you, Bob. It’d be a little creepy if it was someone else’s skull you were carrying around, but it’s yours. I figured if I gave it a little hat, you’d get it.”
“You could have just talked to me.”
Harry shrugs. “The hat’s more fun.”
“Your sewing skills could use work.”
“You’re welcome,” Harry says. He leans in and kisses Bob with a grin. “I’ll see you later. Have fun.”
“Don’t blow up anything,” Bob replies, tucking his skull into his bag and returning Harry’s kiss with one of his own. “I should be back in two hours.”
When Bob walks outside, he realizes he’s still holding the hat. He tucks it into his coat pocket with a smile and wonders what to get Harry for Christmas.
