Children of Earth (short comments)

I have a lot to say about Torchwood: Children of Earth, and not time to say it all now.

So, super-quick highlights.

CoE is definitely disturbing -- but at least it knows it; the story is presented in a way that makes it clear the people who created it meant to disturb you.

Contrast "Journey's End," where the Doctor taking so much from Donna is meant to be the lesser of evils -- at least she's still alive -- and the Doctor taking away her choice in the matter isn't addressed. It's disturbing, to me, precisely because it's meant to not be.

Never forget that the lesser of evils is evil.

Also, I keep comparing both Jack and the Doctor to Buffy. I keep thinking about "The Gift." About how Buffy didn't compromise, wouldn't compromise, and loved her sister so much that she would have sacrificed the whole world just to make it clear that she'd protect Dawn no matter what. I'm not sure if I think she was right, but I am in awe of her bravery and strength.

On another subject... I pledge, right now, from this point forward, that I will see anything Gareth David-Lloyd is in (which, to my extreme disappointment, so far isn't much). He can play pain like Alyson Hannigan and he can do deadpan humor, and watching him makes me think John Barrowman is completely outclassed -- which is saying something.

And it's either abject cruelty or brilliant writing that Ianto Jones continued to become more complex and more fascinating, all the way up until his death. I don't even know what to say about it all. It's not just that Ianto died, it's all the potential that can never go anywhere, now. And I know there's going to be a season 4 next year, which baffles me a bit, because it seems inevitable that it's going to be not just a different show, but a weaker one, without him.

I'm so not done talking about this, but it's late and I'm losing coherency. So.
