After Jin walks past the open door to NewS’s dressing room and sees Ryo pretty much shoving his tongue down Shige’s throat inside, he gasps, puts both hands on his face in a thoroughly scandalized manner, and runs straight for Yamapi and the other NewS members, who are standing around in the hallway chatting with one another after their Shokura filming ended. “I!” he announces to them, out of breath and interrupting Koyama, “Saw something strange just now!”

Silence. Mostly because no one really knows how to respond to that, considering where they work.

Jin huffs. “I saw Ryo-chan shoving his tongue down Shige’s throat just now!” he clarifies.

No one really reacts again.

“Eh…Ryo-tan was kissing Shige?” Tegoshi murmurs after a moment of silence, cocking his head to the side a bit curiously but otherwise not nearly as excited about the whole thing as Jin would have liked him to be. “Jaa…then everything they said during the abake was just flirting after all, ne.” He laughs to himself. “They’re so cute! It’s like a middle school romance.”

Jin sighs. “So not the point.”

Koyama coughs politely. “Then…what is your point?”

Jin thinks that it should be obvious by now; he’s only been asking about it since he got here and clearly no one else is keeping up with him since he’s smarter than all of the rest of NewS combined. “I want to know why Ryo-chan is kissing Shige!” he demands.

Koyama blinks. “Hmmm,” he says, ands stops to think carefully about it too, because if Ryo-chan is kissing Shige, then it must be a recent development, since Shige hasn’t said anything to him about it yet and they tell each other everything.

Koyama even knows how many moles Shige has on his entire body. That’s how best-friendy their best-friendship is.

Yamapi, in the meantime, looks just as boggled, and Koyama knows that Ryo-chan would have at least said something to Captain about kissing Shige if they were doing the whole kissing thing on a regular basis.

After a moment, Yamapi snaps his fingers as realization hits him. “Ah! I know how it happened!” he declares, and everyone stops for a second to applaud Leader’s fine detective skills.

“Sasuga, ne!” Tegoshi chirps brightly, while Yamapi looks proud.

He promptly moves to explain.

“They must have fallen in love yesterday,” Yamapi tells everyone in hushed tones, forcing the others to gather close to him so that they can all hear what he’s saying.

A few passing juniors scuttle around them in the hallway and give them strange looks.

“Eh? Yesterday?” Tegoshi marvels. “What happened?”

“Massu was there,” Yamapi replies, solemnly. “It was after Ryo-chan saved you and Koyama drove you home. That was when Shige realized he loves Ryo-chan, ne.”

“Ah, I missed my best friend’s love story?!” Koyama moans, and looks heartbroken. “I could have taken pictures!”

Tegoshi pats his arm apologetically.

Jin does not understand what is going on or why Ryo saving Tegoshi yesterday has anything to do with why Ryo had been kissing Shige just now. “What happened yesterday?”

Yamapi taps his temple. “Nagase-kun, ne. Nagase-kun kissed Ryo-chan.”

Koyama, sputters. “Nagase-senpai kissed Ryo-chan?!”

Massu blinks. “Didn’t I say so earlier?”

“You said slobbered,” Koyama corrects. “I thought he just drooled on him, ne.”

Massu shrugs. “It looked more like drooling to me.”

Tegoshi laughs to himself, highly amused by the whole thing and feeling sorry he had to hurry home and miss what was apparently a great show last night. “Eh, I didn’t know Nagase-kun liked Ryo-tan that way!” he giggles.

Jin in the meantime, is even more confused now than he was five minutes ago. “How is that a love story between Shige and Ryo-chan if Nagase-kun is drooling all over one of them?!”

Yamapi sighs. “Bakanishi!” he says, “Don’t you understand anything at all? Seeing Nagase-kun kiss Ryo-chan, Shige must have suddenly felt jealous!”

“Uwah,” Koyama breathes, and thinks that part of his heart is breaking for Shige’s sake when he hears Yamapi’s assessment, “Poor Shige!”

Yamapi nods knowingly. “At the time ne, I didn’t realize it, but when I think back on it now, the look on Shige’s face when he saw Nagase-kun kiss Ryo-chan was a look I’d never seen him make ever before.”

“Eh, I want to see a new Shige face like that!” Tegoshi chimes in. “What kind of face was it, Leader?”

Yamapi effects his best impression of Shige’s severe eyebrows, arching one up and furrowing the other one down ever so slightly. Then, he kind of grimaces with his mouth and makes his eyes a little bigger than normal.

He looks just a little bit manic.

Tegoshi promptly bursts into a fresh wave of giggles because he thinks he’s seen something like that on Shige’s face before, only it was when Shige was being nasty and laughing about something particularly stupid Koyama had done one time. Yamapi’s rendition is definitely more powerful than Shige’s was though. “Ah, that is a horrible face!” the youngest member agrees, hoping to get to see it on Shige himself one day. He thinks it would be super funny!

“Right?” Yamapi confirms. “It was horrible! Ask Massu.”

Massu blinks. “If it looked like that, ne… I guess it really was horrible?”

“Massu was eating,” Yamapi clarifies.

“Oh,” everyone says, and can’t expect Massu to have really noticed anything in detail if that’s the case.

Yamapi moves on. “So it was a horrible face, ne. After that, I thought Shige ran out of Koyama’s house once Ryo-chan got free from Nagase-kun because Shige was scared of Ryo-chan. But majide, it must have been because his heart was hurting, ne!”

Koyama feels his own heart wrench sympathetically yet again; this is definitely one of the saddest love stories he’s ever heard!

Yamapi feels the same; he sighs and crosses his arms. “And since then, they must have realized how much they love each other, which is why you saw them kissing just now,” he explains to Jin, finishing the story very matter-of-factly.

Jin is not convinced. “Them being in love after yesterday,” he shouts, “doesn’t sound right to me at all! Maybe Shige just thought Nagase-kun kissing another boy was gross and Ryo-chan is bullying him into doing it because Ryo-chan likes making people do things they hate doing. That makes more sense to me.”

Yamapi sighs. “You just don’t understand people’s hearts, Bakanishi.”

Jin scowls back. “But your story has no proof that Ryo-chan and Shige love each other! First Shige’s jealous, and then they’re suddenly making out. If this were a ten episode drama, you’d only have episode one and episode ten. You’d need to make a whole SP for it to make any sense at all!”

Yamapi gives him a pitying look. “You just don’t understand these complicated kinds of things, ne. It makes perfect sense!”

“Does not!”

“Does too!”

“Not!”

“Does!”

“No…”

“Ano,” Massu starts after a moment, and raises his hand a little. “I think I might have more proof, ne.”

Yamapi is smug. Jin’s face falls.

“Earlier this afternoon, when I was on my way to the dressing room before the taping,” Massu begins, “I stopped at the vending machine to get some chips first.” Pause. “As I was opening them, ne… I didn’t notice that Shige was in front of me, but when I heard the dressing room door slam really loudly all of a sudden, I looked up from my chips and saw that Shige was standing in the hallway right outside our doorway.”

Silence.

“And…” Tegoshi urges, gently.

“And you know, now that I think about it… Shige had a look on his face that seems kind of like the one Yamashita-kun just showed us, ne.”

More silence.

“I am so confused,” Jin sighs, thinking to himself that Shige only really has about one facial expression anyway. Why do they keep bringing it up like it’s a big deal?

“Massu, how does that prove that Shige and Ryo-tan love each other, ne?” Tegoshi asks gently in the meantime, translating for Jin while wondering if Massu distracted himself with the memory of potato chips and forgot the original point he had been trying to make. It’s more than likely.

“Ah! Oh! Sorry,” Massu laughs, “I was just thinking about those chips.” He smiles guilelessly. “What I mean is… after Shige had that expression on his face, he turned around and walked away from the dressing room really quickly, ne. I didn’t think it was weird at the time, but then I needed a drink of water since the chips were salty and I’d left my bag with my water bottle in the dressing room. So I went in to get it.”

“So what happened next? What did you see?” Koyama urges, before Massu can get distracted by the memory of salty chips again.

“When I went inside, Nishikido-kun was the only one there,” Massu finishes, with a solemn nod. “Just like Shige said during the filming, ne.”

Koyama’s heart promptly breaks apart. “Poor Ryo-chan!” he blubbers. “Poor Shige! They were avoiding each other?”

Jin blinks. “Didn’t Shige already say he did that because he and Ryo-chan are uncomfortable being in the same room alone together?”

“Bakanishi!” Yamapi scolds again, smacking Jin on the head as he does this time, “Clearly this is related to the fall out from yesterday. Because Shige was jealous when he saw Ryo-chan kissing someone else, he must have realized that he loves Ryo-chan ne. And so, seeing Ryo-chan the very next day and being alone in the same room with him would have been awkward for Shige after watching him kiss another person, wouldn’t it? Of course he slammed the door and went the other way! And after that, Ryo-chan probably got mad at Shige back-for avoiding him suddenly, since Ryo-chan loves Shige too but didn’t know it at the time either- and that’s why he said all those things about Shige during the filming.”

Jin frowns. “I still don’t think that counts as proof that they’re in love! Are you sure it’s not just Ryo-chan bullying Shige? Or maybe they lost a bet.”

Yamapi looks incredulous. “If all Ryo-chan was doing was bullying Shige, he would have called Shige talentless and slow or thrown things at him instead of kiss him.” Pause. Nod. “I think we definitely have enough proof that says they’re in love now!”

“Well, I never want to be alone in the dressing room with Kame, but that’s because he’s mean, not because I love him,” Jin argues.

“He has a point,” Tegoshi concedes.

Massu shrugs.

Yamapi’s brow furrows. Again. “Fine,” he declares, resolutely, “I’ll give you more proof.”

“You haven’t given me any yet.”

Yamapi ignores that; he snaps his fingers when he gets another idea. “Ah, I know!” he announces.

“Sasuga leader!” Tegoshi chirps good-naturedly.

Yamapi grins. “Yesterday, before Nagase-kun kissed Ryo-chan, Shige was laughing and smiling and tickling him! Er, tickling Ryo-chan, no Nagase-kun! From the kitchen, I could tell that they were talking alone together very comfortably, ne. So clearly they aren’t really uncomfortable when they’re alone with each other like Ryo-chan said.”

Koyama wipes his eyes with the backs of his hands and manages a small smile at that image. “How cute,” he says, “Ryo-chan and Shige’s happy times of love before this whole kissing Nagase-senpai mess tore them apart. It must have been so adorable ne.”

Yamapi nods. “It was very cute! Ryo-chan was screaming and calling Shige names and promising revenge while Shige laughed so hard he was red, ne. Just like a couple!”

“Cute!” Koyama repeats, wishing he’d been able to stay long enough to see the scene Yamapi is describing to them. Mentioning something member-ai-full like that somehow manages to ease some of Koyama’s previous heartache.

“So, you see?” Yamapi says, nodding at Jin, “Before the kiss, they were happy as always, ne. Then after it, everything went downhill! That has to mean something.”

Koyama is reminded of the downhill part and promptly gets sad again.

Jin wants to say that he still thinks it’s something else entirely, but doesn’t want to get smacked by Yamapi again. So instead, he raises his hand and says, “Fine, if they were fighting fifteen minutes ago, why are they kissing now?” He definitely thinks it takes Ryo-chan a lot longer than that to cool off whenever he’s annoyed with someone; usually Jin has to buy him something nice and talk about how much sexier Ryo-chan is than anyone else in JE before Ryo-chan will stop being grumpy with him.

A moment.

This time it’s Koyama who speaks up; “Oh, I know why! I know why now!” he says.

“Eh, Kei-chan is amazing,” Tegoshi marvels, genuinely impressed with how quickly Koyama can put two and two together when it comes to matters of member-ai.

“Just now ne, when Shige and I were arguing about whether he could MC or not, Ryo-chan came up to us and called us idiots while laughing ne. It must have been his way of apologizing to Shige for kissing someone else and saying mean things about Shige when he was angry.”

“Ah!” Tegoshi and Massu chirp in tandem, “I see.”

Jin blinks. “What?”

“Yesterday, Ryo-chan called Nagase a lonely, desperate idiot,” Yamapi adds, for clarification.

“Huh,” Jin says, and supposes that he is well-versed enough in Ryo Speak to know the difference between endearment form and I hate you form. Most of the time. “So…”

Koyama presses on, feeling hope swell in his chest again as the story begins to hit its emotional climax. “Then Shige, ne, Shige practically said that between he and Ryo-chan, they were both idiots; it’s like Shige was saying ‘I’m sorry’ back to Ryo-chan in Ryo-chan’s own special code!”

Jin’s brow furrows. “Why would Shige need to say sorry if he wasn’t the one kissing a senpai?”

Yamapi sighs. “For slamming the door on Ryo-chan, of course. And avoiding him. And for telling Nagase-kun to kiss Ryo-chan in the first place.”

Jin blinks “He what?”

“That’s not important!” Koyama interrupts, “What’s important is that Ryo-chan said he needed to pay Shige back for yesterday. When Shige ran away, Ryo-chan chased after him. To kiss him.”

“A love chase!” Tegoshi laughs, sweetly. “They are really cute!”

To Jin, it sounds more like a revenge chase for Shige’s part in making Nagase-kun kiss Ryo yesterday, but then again, he isn’t really sure he understands the whole concept of member-ai enough (at all) to say anything about it without getting those judgmental, pitying looks thrown at him from the rest of NewS all over again.

“Jaa, so when Akanishi-kun saw them kissing, it must have been after a big, heart wrenching confession where they realize they love each other, just like in Yamapi’s drama!” Koyama finishes, looking ecstatic at the prospect. “And now they’ll live happily ever after forever!!”

The other NewS members cheer approvingly. “What a great way to fall in love!” they all sigh, feeling thoroughly romantic.

They are so engrossed by the mere thought of a love story that none of them notice that Ryo is chasing Shige around in the background; he’s cursing and calling Shige names (like slow and talentless) while swearing revenge. Sometimes he grabs things out of passing staff members’ hands and throws them at Shige’s head.

Jin sighs and doesn’t understand why he always gets called the dumb one.
