Some things I've done since the last time I blogged:
- Went hiking with some friends:
see pictures - Went on an awesome trip to Victoria, BC with John and his parents:
see pictures - Saw a theater adaptation of "The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears", and enjoyed it more than I enjoyed reading the book.
- Saw David Sedaris at Benaroya Hall (likely the fanciest place I'll ever hear that many curse words). He read some new stories and just sort of talked a lot. It was great.
- Spent a week doing a fieldwork with a home health agency. Every time I do a fieldwork I get all psyched up about occupational therapy again (as opposed to how I feel sitting in class every day). I found the home health client base (mostly geriatric and hospice clients) to be very interesting, but I don't think home health is for me. There are too many limitations placed on the scope of an OT service delivery (thanks mostly to insurance), and too many time constraints resulting from agency productivity standards. Also, a main component of home health is ordering equipment for people. I love a good tub transfer bench as much as the next OT (a lot), but I don't think I want to spend hours and hours selecting and ordering them. And now that Medicare pays for...um...well hardly anything, its difficult to tell home-bound (so really really sick/disabled) people exactly what equipment they need, and then tell them that they have to pay for it themselves. Of course, all of those complaints aside, it's just so freaking practical to see people in their natural environment. Teaching someone how to cook in a hospital kitchen is a good start, but actually being able to see the way an individual's environment supports/limits their occupational performance is excellent. Also, this was my first experience with hospice clients, so that was interesting/educational. Personally, I have only recently come to the realization that I am not immortal, and am at a stage in my life where I am pretty terrified of death. So, at least for the time being, I don't think hospice is for me either. We saw one client in the morning who died later that afternoon :(
- Re-watched every episode of The Office season 1-4 on Netflix (I LOVE the "watch instantly" feature).
