It's a beautiful day today in my part of the Shire and i'm off which is kind of sweet for i'm not always off and i tend to be a workaholic hobbit. Maybe i'll do chores and write fanfic today..and also go out :P
So i was rereading RotK and was caught by the passage that Gandalf left the hobbits to fend for themselves in the Shire to deal with Sharkey and his men themselves. I emailed Grey_Wonderer about it and asked if this was kind of inappropriate for Gandalf to do since he used the hobbits to overthrow Sauron and all but didn't bother to go back to help them against Saruman? Grey_wonderer said that it was needed in order to establish the hobbits themselves for the Battle of Bywater mainly saw Merry and Pippin gaining honor.
grey_wonderer also said this in email: Maybe Gandalf knew that if he were there, because of his power, he would have been the one to save the Shire, not the hobbits.
I mean granted, the hobbits have grown and can deal with everything themselves but i thought that Gandalf could help as well? Or maybe his way of saying it sounds like he didn't want part of anything anymore which i know he is tired but that passage made him seem a bit ....like he shouldn't care for their affairs but it's ok for them to sacrifice themselves for being the vessel for bringing the Ring to Mount Doom... does anyone else feel that way or everyone thinks it's fine?
"I am not coming to the Shire. You must settle its affairs yourselves; that is what you have been trained for. Do you not yet understand? My time is over: it is no longer my task to set things to rights, not to help folk to do so. And as for you, my dear friends you will need no help. You are grown up now. Grown indeed very high; among the great you are, and I have no longer any fear at all for any of you."
Ok it sounds great that Gandalf has confidence in them but probably tell them what to expect? I remember them looking upon Bagend and Hobbiton being the "saddest of their lives". Maybe i'm overprotective of my hobbits but i thought Gandalf can at least help some? Or it is fine the way things are?
Thoughts, debate, discussion welcome! =)
And Happy birthday to dear
