Someone must answer me this question...(Fandom related)

So is it in my headcanon or in actuality that the reason Denethor scorned Faramir is that he looked like Finduilas, his late wife in temperament or in looks? So because Findulias came to early death that he kind of blamed Faramir? I think Faramir was only 5 when Finduilas died ( Read more... )

I thought it was book canon (in one of those ROTK appendices someplace) that Finduilas died giving birth to Faramir, hence Denethor's resentment and later mistreatment of him . . . I could be wrong.

I think it was not during birth but a couple years later. Thanks for your thoughts!
Appendix A talks a little about Denethor and his family.

Faramir was 4 when Finduilas died.

I don't think anywhere does Tolkien say that Faramir looked like Finduilas, though that is my head canon too. Tolkien does tell us that both Denethor and Faramir remind Pippin of Aragorn.

Gandalf says Denethor and Faramir are alike, I think in their Numenorean traits.

This for example, is my head canon, but it is only what i think, not in the book

In the Appendix, i just read that Faramir looks like Boromir and it states that Boromir is like Denethor in face and pride so i guess that makes Faramir resemble them as well.
Thanks for your thoughts and also affirming that prob it's in my head canon that Faramir resembles Finduilas more in temperament then? But there is no conclusive evidence to say that it is because of that that Denethor doesn't favor him?
I think it's more because he follows MIthrandir too much ?

Thanks for the link to your fic! I think i've read this one before but ill gladly read again. :)

I think from canon we can infer that Denethor is angry that Faramir listens to Gandalf.

It makes sense to believe that Faramir's gentleness comes from his mother, as he doesn't get it from Denethor. Gandalf said Denethor loved Boromir all the more because they were unlike,so maybe Denethor and Faramir were too alike to get on.

Yes, I think Linda pretty much has the little we know in canon down in a nutshell.

Also, Faramir had his father's insight into the character and motives of others; as Denethor's mind began to slip beneath the stress of using the palantir, it's possible he began to fear his son realizing the things he tried to keep secret.

That's speculation, and so not strictly canon, but I think it's something to consider.

In my own headcanon, Denethor might have blamed Faramir partially for Finduilas' death, since I believe that Faramir's death weakened her and made her more vulnerable to physical problems, as well as the miasma of Mordor-sorcery and even perhaps Sauron's personal attacks. But there's no canon specifying that Faramir resembled his mother. We don't know what Finduilas looked like, she is never described. I actually think that Faramir is his father's son, but perhaps a fuller, more broad-minded and compassionate version of Denethor - when he can exercise that compassion, he does. Faramir is a warrior; he is not so overwhelmingly gentle that he can't kill men quickly and efficiently. He also is less arrogant than either his father or his brother.

I love the icon! I was thinking of using ANke Eissman's Faramir too for making icons! Good choice! =)

I think Findulias was described a little in the appendix? She had elven blood and was beautiful as well like the Findulias of the First Age? You're right that there is no text to support that Faramir resembled Findulias though so it's everyone's head canon that perhaps they were similar in thought or looks.

Yes i agree that Faramir has different temperament than Boromir and Denethor but we cannot conclude through canon that it is because of being like his mother.

Thank you for your thoughts!
