I haven't announced this widely because I didn't want to jinx anything, but the ink on the contract is dry now and everything is moving right along. Because, as of October 1st,
I will be working for Google! In München!
Yes, I got a job at freaking Google! I can hardly get my arms down! Even if it's no longer the time of instant millionaires, it is still an awesome place with brilliant people doing really nifty things. And I get to be one of them. WOOT!
Of course, as usual, my work will be mostly invisible to outsiders, as I'll be working on internal tools, at least to begin with. But things are pretty fluid within Google, so I may end up doing something entirely different eventually. You never know.
Oh, and in München[1]. A city so awesome, it holds the worlds largest science and technology museum. (Unfortunately, it's also going to hold a horde of drunk Americans when I get there, but that'll pass.) And it's just an hour from the Dragonsclaw Mountains (a.k.a. the Alps). And other cool things too numerous to enumerate here.
This is without doubt the biggest thing in my career to date, and possibly the biggest ever. It has potential for being the last job I'll ever get (though never say never - I probably have another 30+ years of programming in me, and that's a long time these days).
Now that it's public, I'll be posting a lot more about what's going on with moving and selling the apartment and settling in at Google (as much as I'm allowed to) and being in München and dealing with Germans and other things. 'Cause it's new and exciting and just too incredible for words (not that that stops me:) and I mentally pinch myself every day over it.
Hugs to everyone who helped and supported me for this. I'll bring back bratwurst and beer for you!
