It was quite early when Dale woke up and slipped out of bed, doing his best not to wake Charlotte. A few minutes later Dale was partially dressed and in the kitchen making coffee as he made his usual morning notations to Diane.
"Diane it's approximately 5:53 AM, Thursday morning. Spent the night at Charlotte's which is more than enough information than you need to know," he said as he measured the precise amount of coffee for the filter. "Her gallery exhibit last night was, as usual, a complete success in my opinion. It fascinated to me to no small amount. Remind me to get additional information about the artist as well as any particular school he/she follows along with a corresponding list of inspirational artists that follow that particular movement. At the moment I'm currently starting a pot of coffee as well as attempt to make a breakfast before I have to show up to work. I had an odd dream last night about carrots. Yes, carrots, Diane. And while I'm not a huge fan of the vegetable, I can't help but find that I have this enormous craving for a bunch of them as well."
Dale as the coffee finished he pulled out two mugs and filled them as he spoke. "Additionally in my dream I was being chased by a bald man with a speech impediment that wore a hunter's cap even though it was duck season."
He put the mug down after taking a sip and leaned up against the counter. "Diane it might be a good idea to cut down on my coffee consumption in the late evening if dreams like this continue to occur. In fact I-"
The recorder the fell out of Dale's hand and clattered on the counter. Surprised, Dale went to pick it up again only to realize that his hand was no longer a hand but a paw.
And instead of standing he was now sitting on the counter
Interesting.
Hitting the record button on his voice recorder Dale attempted to make an entry. //"Diane, I appear to have turned into a small bunny rabbit. Complete with floppy ears. Of course this will make no sense to you because I sound like a bunny. In times like this I think the best thing one can do is take a sip of coffee and wait to see if help will come along."//
Charlotte couldn't say she was entirely surprised to wake up to an empty bed once she finally came around to opening her eyes, letting out a small stretch and taking a comfortable moment. The stress of setting up the current exhibit completely disappeared in lieu of the opening and it was probably the first good night's rest she'd had since the start of the week. She had expected to sleep in a little, and, thankfully, a small glance at the clock told her that it was still probably early enough that Dale still hadn't left for work. She would like to think that he wouldn't have left for the day without saying good-bye, but, at the same time, she knew he also wouldn't have wanted to wake her up. The faint scent of coffee being brewed coming in from the kitchen, however, made her smile a little with the realization that, if he was still here, that's probably, of course, where he was.
She slipped into a nightgown and some slippers and, after a moment to check in the mirror that her morning face and bedhead wasn't too bad, she shuffled her way toward the kitchen. Well, sure enough, there was the coffee, of which was the first thing she noticed besides a lack of anyone else in the kitchen. The rabbit on the counter, it would seem, at first escaped her attention entirely. It was entirely possible that he felt he might need to get to work, and just left the coffee on for her once she got around to waking up, so she checked for a note. Not seeing one and feeling a bit perplexed, she moved toward one of the mugs set out.
And that's when she noticed the rabbit, with a small shout of surprise to signal the realization and a small jump back as well, hand to her chest. At least it was just a rabbit, and not a mouse or something, so Charlotte blushed a little in embarrassment at having been so shocked, although, really, who expected a rabbit in their kitchen so early in the morning? She stared at it a little, wondering what it was doing there and what it was doing on Dale's tape recorder. Especially since the tape recorder hardly seemed like something he would have left behind.
//"Hello, Charlotte,"// Dale said with a nose wiggle as he hopped to his coffee cup and perched on it with his paws. //"I realize it will probably be difficult to understand this as I am a bunny. I am however, your boyfriend. In bunny form. I realize this will be an adjustment in our relationship but I think if we work together we can take this in stride. Now, I don't suppose you have a straw I could use? I'll think better with a bit more caffeine in my system."//
If Charlotte didn't know any better, she'd have almost thought that the rabbit was trying to talk to her. She blinked at it a little bit again, eying it as it slowly crept into her head that, really, it was actually quite possible around here. Her eyebrows frowned a moment as she took in a few other details about the scene. Left behind tape recorder was one thing. An unfinished cup of coffee was another thing entirely, and very suspect. And, really, in certain situations, Charlotte could exhibit a bit of effective deductive reasoning herself. She frowned worriedly at the rabbit as she voiced the conclusion she'd come around to, still tentatively, although, really, if she was wrong, it wasn't like the rabbit would care that she'd made an incorrect assumption. "...Dale?"
//"Ah! Very good!"// Dale said with a nod and another nose wiggle. //"I hope this isn't a problem for you, Charlotte. I'm not sure why I'm a bunny but hopefully this won't be a difficult issue for you to deal with."//
He then leaned his head over into the mug to get a sip of coffee. //"Why don't you sit down and have some coffee. I'm sure this is a bit of a shock."//
While she would have to admit that her knowledge of rabbits was a bit lacking, Charlotte was pretty sure that they weren't naturally inclined toward coffee, and that this one was doing all he could to get into that cup just sealed the deal for her. "Here," she said quickly after a moment to shake her head, as if that would help her feel a little less disoriented. It didn't help but, but it did get her moving to the cupboard, which she opened to pull out a small shallow bowl that she could pour some coffee into and set on the counter. "There. That should be at least a little easier to get to, I'd hope."
And, as quickly as possible after she'd set that up, she went for some coffee for herself. She wasn't even going to bother adding any cream or sugar, because she needed it as strong as possible for this. The only thing she would have expended time to add was perhaps a bit of whiskey, but it was definitely way too early for that."
/"Ah. Thank you Charlotte. You are a completely wonderful and thoughtful woman,"// Dale said hopping to the saucer. //"If I weren't a bunny, I'd reward you with a peck on the cheek."//
After getting a bit of coffee he then hopped over to where Charlotte was and gave her a sympathetic nose wiggle. //"I apologize for inconvenience of this Charlotte. However I appreciate your support."//
.
Charlotte truly was trying not to boggle at the whole situation, but she found it difficult not to as she eyed what was most likely Dale over the rim of her coffee mug. She'd dealt with a lot of bizarre situations in her relationships, but this one was definitely new and would take the cake for a good long while. She hoped. And, yes, she realized that it wasn't the first time he'd turned into anything, but that last time, they were both changed, which made this situation entirely different. Especially since, as ponies, they could still communicate in the exact same way.
The nose wiggling got a bit of a smile out of her though, because, really. He was pretty adorable like that. She shook her head slightly for a moment. "Well," she decided thoughtfully, "I suppose in a bit here I should take you down to the station, and see if anyone else is turning into a rabbit today and, if not, explain the situation a little. Are you hungry at all? I think I have some carrots in the fridge, unless you're fine with just coffee?"
Good Lord, she was talking to a rabbit. Just because it was her boyfriend didn't change the fact that she was still doing it.
//"Well I could always eat,"// Dale the rabbit surmised. //"However if you are so inclined, I'd prefer that we stop at J'GOB where I could get a doughnut. Or some carrot cake."//
...Problem with talking to a rabbit was that they couldn't exactly talk back; they just sort of made a few indistinguishable and barely noticeable sounds, which left Charlotte a little uncertain as to what Dale's thoughts on the matter were. She took a moment to consider before deciding with a nod and going to the fridge to procure aforementioned carrots. And some lettuce, which she went about cutting up a little as she explained, "Either way, you should eat something. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and I think that's true whether you're a person or you're a rabbit, and I'm pretty sure it's not good to go on just a stomach full of coffee, especially if you're a rabbit..."
Dale let out a small bunny sigh. Oh well, at least he still had coffee to sustain him during his period of bunnyhood and hopped over to his saucer to finish his coffee and waited with dread to see the reaction of his co-workers when they saw him all bunny-fied.
